Guest ncst8wuf
I've pulled a P1171. Searching the posts and the conversion chart, it could be anything from a vacuum leak to the Mass Air sensor. Someone also suggested the O2 sensor. My symptoms are as follows:-The CEL has been triggering on and off for the past few days.-I made a 400 mile trip without the light on, the following day the light was on. I made some short drives and the next day the light was off for another 300 mile drive.-Once again the light came on the following day.-The car is not running great, but not rough-just slightly noisier than usual under acceleration.-Highway mileage seems fine, around town seems to be suffering.Should I pay a shop to use a reader that will give me a Volvo specific code, and would that point me closer to the problem? Thanks for any help,Joel
MrWinkey
If you register you will get a better response? But usually a 1171 is a vacuum leak somewhere ;)

starfish
A P1171 is equates to a Volvo ECM-261A Long term fuel trim upper limit. Check for a vacuum leak. The MAF meter could also be the problem, but a bad O2.... I doubt it.
ncst8wuf
Thanks for the info. Would any area be more prone to a vacuum leak than another. I will start to look there.Do I need to check the exhaust also?Once again, thanks,Joel
starfish
Click on the Repairs/Maitenance tab and scroll down to "Engine Vacuum Leaks". Check out the top picture of the vacuum elbow on the intake manifold. It's probably the most common area for a leak to occur.
