First post...

When I turn the key I get rapid "electrical" clicking and that is it. Seems to effect the remote locks as well. Happened once before and then it stopped. Not so lucky this time it seems. I've tried all keys (including valet key).

ideas?

wasn't quite so simple...there was an electrical fault on the driver side door lock mechanism. This was draining the battery. So yes, dead battery, but root cause cost a few bucks...not too bad thought, glad to have fixed.

Load test the battery after a full charge (if dead). This is the quickest and most cost-effective fix as a first step. However, if battery continues to go dead after receiving and taking to a full charge - then something is causing a drain on the battery.

The second item I would look at is the alternator/voltage regulator. If your battery cannot be maintained at a full charge by your alternator, then your battery is powering your car -which does not last very long.

If neither of these items tests bad then you have a electrical short somewhere and will need to test your Ignition switch back to your battery /starter and if need be the rest of your wire harness until you find an open circuit (i.e. short). This is not fun! You may want to hire an automotive electrical specialist to inspect/test and repair.

I've been there done that. Hopefully if it is not your battery it is your alternator.

P.S. Dont forget to test/troubleshoot your starter too!

FWIW; everyone once in a while my dome lights will remain forever on until i restart the car. no amount of opening the door, or putting it just on accessory seems to clear it. once it's restarted the lights will delay dim after 30 seconds or so, like it's supposed to.

I was going to expand on my post actually saying to check what drained it after you got it running again, but got lazy. Glad to hear you got it fixed alright.

And yes, S80's are notorious for having all *sorts* of elecrical problems. Actually all P2 Volvo's seem to have lots of electrical issues, but it's a small price to pay for what we get in return.

Again, glad you got it fixed.

SkyWriter - have you tried using the yellow button on your remote (for approach lights) to get them to turn off if they don't turn off after you lock the car?

yeah, i hate to admit but, every volvo i've owned have had one kind of electrical problem or another. even the 240's :)

yup, tried the little yellow button; didn't effect the interior lighting. the exterior worked as expected. i tried all kinds of goofy combinations, with the window down turning things on and off, etc... just start it up, and it went away.

maybe they used WinCE :)
