Sc-816 "phone" Message

Hi guys,

So does the SC-816 radio has the telephone mute feature or not? I'm certain that the European version SC-805 radio has it, just not sure if Volvo deleted the telephone mute feature on the SC-816 intended for the USA / Australian market, or they only removed all the RDS stuff.

I'm getting the impression that SC-816 doesn't have telephone mute... but if it doesn't, how come it display "PHONE"? Can anyone tell me for certain?

I used to have a nokia cark-91 installed with a SC-816 before.

I did connect the "cell-mute" lead to the the nokia harness.

When the cell mute lead gets pulled to ground, the radio pauses/mutes and says "phone" on the LCD display.

I don't recall exactly which pin/wire it was, but something tells me that it was gray, but I could be mistaken.

Judging from the wiring diagram posted earlier, pin 10 sounds like a good place to start.

If there is no pin10 on your radio harness, then the pin might be shorted to ground inside the radio chassis.

Hope this helps.

prove it.

Wow, aren't we getting a bit confrontational?

Yeah, I'll prove it, but while I spend the time to 'prove it,' since you obviously don't believe me...I have one question to pose:

Have you ever proven that the SC-816 does NOT have a cell-mute lead? Or are you just looking at wiring diagrams with no hands-on reference?

I'll be back in a while.

that was a friendly prove it. :)

the question was, a STOCK 816, installed in a US SPEC CAR.. is there a way to mute it with a OEM cell phone adapter..

and the answer is no.

Sorry for misunderstanding, the large font caps exclamation initially led me to believe otherwise.

Here's some friendly proof :)

Okay, so grounding pin A9, which is a white wire with a gray stripe, will cause the radio to mute/pause and display "Phon e" on the LCD.

Details on the head unit:

SC-816

p/n 3533929-1

s/n VO9910 W5079008C

Hope this squashes any doubts, and if you feel so inclined to do so, test it out for yourselves.

I know the wire is labeled as N/C on the diagrams, but I remember using a multimeter to find the correct call-mute wire back in 1998.

Thank you for the info. Will check out A9 (which is a white wire with a gray stripe). I'll start using a 10K pull down resistor to GND (to prevent any damage by limiting the current), and take it from there. If all goes well with this test, I will connect my cell phone system to this pin, and report back.

Cheers! Rabbit :)

YES, IT DOES!!!

Connection A9 is CONFIRMED! :P

Rabbit,

That proof just isn't going to cut it. I'm gonna need a picture of your face, next to today's Wall Street Journal, and the head-unit saying "Phon e" :P

J/k, thanks for posting the pic, glad to hear it worked for you.

And, uh, Kevin, maybe you want to check your facts before writing something in HUGE FONT letters that is straight up WRONG. Remember, "post count != wisdom"

to the knowledge that we had, as this had been discussed before, was no.

I'm glad that someone chimed in who had better knowledege.

- it seems the only way anyone ever wants to post good information around here is to directly and blatantly tell them no.

- thanks for the tip on post count... FYI i could give a shit less about post count.. more people here should too.
