Hilton
Hey guys, it's been a long time. I just ordered a new timing belt and the cam locking tool from IPD. Pretty cool that it comes with an instruction DVD. My Volvo now has ~156K miles on it. When I bought the car in February with ~149K miles on it, the man who sold it to me didn't have any maintenance records. So far, I've changed all the fluids, vacuum lines/ elbows, filters, plugs/ wires, cap/rotor, brake pads (PBR, no complaints). I installed an Autometer boost gauge in a single pod on the a-piller, and bought the Upsolute tune.I've claybar'd the car and conditioned the leather. The main things that I have not replaced are the turbo hoses. I just can't justify spending the money on the Samco ones. Maybe once I've upgraded to a slightly larger turbo.Anyway, I just wanted to say hello and tell of my upcoming installation adventure.
viperman135
Sounds good man. You are doing the smart thing in doing all the maintenance before upgrading. Thats what im doing so that I dont have one of those "I just a got a chip and cant boost above 6psi" stories. I to need to replace my timing belt in the next couple of thousand miles. That is one part you do not want breaking on you very bad news.
T5BRICK
while you are in there you should replace the water pump, the tensioner and the idler pully.

Gioseppe
And the serpentine belt since you'll have easy access to it.this is good adviceif you didn't get any service records with the car, do every current major service over again. neglected cars are out there. save yourself.but timing belt, serp belt, water pump.good things to do. Hilton
Thanks. Would you mind showing me a link? I looked around, but there's no point reinventing the wheel if you already have confidence in a dealer. I found the water pump and serpentine belt. The tensioner and the idler pully may be tougher. Gioseppe
that's pretty much it. timing belt, serp belt.... you've done pretty much everything else.i can't think of anything else off the top of my head.
Hilton
I ordered the serpentine belt, water pump, and thermostat from IPD. They were able to add it to my previous order to save on shipping. They don't carry the tensioner though. I called the Volvo dealership here in Shreveport. They told me that they don't carry the part, but that they can order it. It's $180. Does that sound right? I don't plan on replacing that part. I'm already in for around $220. Gioseppe
don't bother with the tensioner. they don't go bad that often, and very doubtful it will with your car.
Hilton
That's good to hear. Here's what I've ordered. I think that's a lot of parts for $210. KLS
I found the timing belt replacement description here in Bay 13 much more help than the IPD DVD...it's done on an engine on a stand. The job is easy enough, the access is the hard part.Ken

Hilton
I replaced the timing belt, serp belt, water pump, thermostat, and upper engine mount today. It was all pretty straight forward. The toughest part was getting that 30mm nut off the harmonic balancer. I read about the "rope trick", but I didn't feel very good about it. I wound up wedging a screwdriver (BIG one) between two of the bolts around the pulley. I did the same thing putting it back on, and used some locktight blue. I'll check it again after Christmas, hopefully with AIR TOOLS! Yay for Santa. It took about 4 hours, including a trip to Harbor Freight (tool store). AirSquid
Sounds like it's too late, but I would have replaced the tensioner for sure over 100k miles. My wife's Volvo's tensioner ate itself up at 110k miles. Barely saved it before the belt came completely off. Definitely replace it on your next belt change!and, ummm....why did you pull the balancer off?-Squid

I've got 130K on my 850 and will be pulling the second timing belt off to replace, so I will take your advice on the tensioner while I am at it. Thanks.OBTW: F-18 is a good ship regardless of the role (air-to-air or to mud). Too bad the AF picked the F-16. Of course if they hadn't the F-18 would have been a Northrop product vice MD.dd
