tenn850
I think I need a new turbo charger. It is making wierd noise and no power. The dealer said $800 for a new turbo for 98 S70 T5 . I have never taken one apart, but is there parts available for rebuilding?I just got this car, and I also have an 850 NA. I am getting to know the new one! tenn850
Thanks. I have a grinding noise (not smooth) and some smoke from the tail. A shop mechanic in town said it is most likely the turbo. How do you read the codes? (OBDII scanner)

zazzn
I agree the turbos are pretty robust... take off the intake pipe and see if the turbo spins freely and if it touches the housing or grinds at all.. if so then yes the turbo is pretty much shot. 800 for a rebulid is not worth it... while you are at it you should upgrade it for something a lil bigger more fun ;)

tenn850
The mechanic I talked to said I need to replace/rebuild the turbo. It does not have the smooth whistling that my brother's SAAB had. The car has 135K miles. Before I had the impression that this thing would push me into my seat! But it seems it has just a little more punch than my 850. Have you ever rebuilt one of these?

the underlørd
135K miles.ok, i thought you meant the SAAB. i dunno, 135K and a bad turbo, just sounds so rare.
tenn850
Oh No!! Not rare.A friend of mine bought an S80 (2000?) with 97K. Twin turbo. We could scratch butter out of the engine from oil cap around the cams with finger. Bought from a dealer for 5K, a lady driver traded in. He sold it after cleaning up the engine and replacing the turbos. Sold for 10K. He said both turbos were jammed. i think he said he run tranny fluid 1/2, 1/2 oil! There are things lady drivers do to these cars, we can't even imagine. Like not changing oil for 50k.
