mikeys
My Volvo mechanic told me not to worry about doing a transmission oil change on my 2000 S80 unless the oil was really dark and smelt bad. He said his experience is if once you change it, it seems to start giving you problems. I was just wanting to do it for preventive maintenance. What are your experiences with transmission oil changes??
MrWinkey
That is a synthetic fluid and I would recommend changing it at 60k intervals? Just my personal preferance that is a GM tranny ya' know ;)
Fisher
By the time the fluid is burnt and dark, the transmission is probably toast. By waiting till your fluid is this bad, you increase the likelyhood that you have a lot of varnish build-up. The new fluid will break this stuff off and try to suspend it, carrying it to your vital parts and clogging things up. This is what causes problems. Regular drain and fills will keep the accumulation of clutch material and varnish to a minimum. I am not sure where the previous poster got his information, but your fluid is not likely synthetic unless you have had it serviced in the past. I like to do drain and fill (which only removes what is in the pan, not the torque converter) every 15k miles. I think 30k miles is the most I would go. This would be the time to service any filters also.
Guest Another guest
The transmission in your S80 is a GM trans, it uses DEXRON III, and also has a filter in there that should be changed. Change the fluid when it starts to turn brown or you see silt on the dip stick when you check it. Your mileage may varry but the brown fluid never lies. (change it)

A pimp named Slickback
That car takes regular trans fluid, don't waste your money on synthetic. I believe the recommended changing interval with that car was every 22,500 miles.
mikeys
The dealer told me they would flush the tranny and didn't have to change the filter. She said the flush would clean the filter also? This is the dealer talking. They said they would do it for $199.95. Is this a fair price and would anyone use anyone other than the dealer? volvo4lif3
Seems very expensive.....Volvo told me my tranny was a sealed system, and that it wasn't necessary to change the tranny fluid at all.....I was asking this because my orginal transmission went out just before 100k......and I dont want it to happen again. My Volvo dealer says change it and yours says don't, I guess I need one more input from someone elses Dealer to break this tie so I can deside on whether to change it or not. I really do want to change it just for sake of mind, but $199.95 seems like a crap load for just changing fluid.

dragon17
No clue, but its a GM tranny.Just like the new S80 is getting a Yamaha V8. Automotive partnerships? It's a shame that the GM tranny only has 4 speeds.
