Bringing A Used Car Into California

I'm looking around autotrader for an 95-97 850r. There's a nice looking one in TX.

I'm wondering what are the pitfalls of trying to buy car from out of state, besides the obvious difficultes of the logistics. I know I would have to get the car smogged, but I was hoping someone might give me some information from their firsthand experience.

Also, I've been looking around for a buying guide for 850s, but I haven't found one. Are there any resources for this? Like a list of specific things that should be checked on 850s?

i bought a 6-95 build date t5r into cali from conneticut and it is 50 state legal. it has a functioning ob2 port next to the shifter- so it is ob2, although it has functioning self diagnostic dealies next to the ecu box as well. i had 0 problems regestering it, the guy who looked at the car signed off in without a question. anything after my car is no problem- i do not know about pre ob2 cars.

good luck!

i should add- my car was bone stock when it came in.

I was under the impression that 96+ was OBDII. Eitherway good to know. I was checking out the CA DMV website and they have a whole bunch of stuff on bringing in out of state cars that makes it sound like it can be a real hassle.

Any other words of wisdom from my fellow CA VS'ers? If I'm going to be buying a new car it will be while I'm on winter break.

Right now I'm just looking, but there was a really clean looking, single owner 96 850r in Texas.

There was also a T-5R that was 13 miles from me, but the seller has yet to contact me.

by the way '95 T-5R v. '96-97 850R

95 has EGR. and 15g versus 96 which has no EGR and a 16t, but no cool motor sport badge?

also who was it who could run free CarFAXes?

All T-5®s in US have 15Gs. Only the '95 T-5Rs have conical flange whereas the other two have straight.

Slater sells (did sell) a replica badge once before.

BTownVolvo had carfax for a while before, but I think it's gone now (been about two weeks :()

ah thanks.

Another side note, as I was jogging this afternoon down the street below where I live I came across a black S70 for sale.

It's a 1998, with a V70R bumper and a spoiler. I can't be certain what the trimline is because it either has been removed or someone's disguised a base S70. The sign says its a 2.3 liter turbo. The other thing is it has suede inserts on the seats, and anthracite Columbias. Sadly the front and rear bumper look a little beat up, so I have to wonder how well the thing was taken care of.

I think I remember someone selling a silver S70 with similar seats, and anthracite columbias here over the summer. I think it was a special package is that right?

That's a SE package, and if the sign is correct and it is a 2.3L then that would be a HPT(the one you want)

And Like Alex said, I would try to find one that has been in cali its whole life. I know of 3 that are in the auto trader right now(in San Diego), 2 wagons, 1 sedan all black.

Bringing a used car into cali isn't that hard. I'm trying remember several loop holes. One is if your car was wrecked or something in another state, you can buy a car (used or new) there and bring it back legally. I'm trying to remember the other ones...

My 850 isn't a cali car. It was from texas originally, I guess the previous owner somehow got it over...

Yah there are a bunch of silly loopholes. I think those pertain to new cars though, which is really odd.

I definitely am going to be going with something from a state that doesn't see snow or much rain.

Anyways, I'm gona take a look tomorrow at the S70 down the street. Thanks for all the replies.
