Help Buying Cars

ok so my constant mention of VS and of how much i love my volvo, it has really turned some of my friends into volvo fanatics

my one friend brian is hoping to find an 850 turbo

my girlfriend's mom, after hearing about my volvo, wants her daughters first car to be a volvo AWD wagon

my friend (who was just involved ina side accident in a subaru outback) wants an AWD vehicle that has side airbags (SRS in the seats is exactlyw hat shes looking for so basically any AWD volvo)

i know that the v70 is the best AWD

my girlfriend has almost no budget (just not new)

my friend has a pretty average budget (ill post it soon)

i have heard a few things about volvo V70s after 98 and some problems

any list of things to check for (ill be involved in asking the dealer/private seller about the vehicle) so it would be nice for things to ask about and look for in the volvos (i know the basic timing belt replacement and other basics, just ive heard a few things about ABS braking modules on some years are weird or something)

anything unique or could be problematic, could you let me know

did they make an AWD 850 or was the v70 and other 70 models the only AWD

ive seriously made a difference in my town hahaha

any help is awesome thanks guys

Shopping with other people's money is always fun. :)

There are some 850 AWDs, but they are rare and mostly in Canada. 98 looks like the year for you to look for the AWD cars. 99+ have the troublesome ETM problem.

cool thanks

sorry but what is the ETM and what causes the problem

and i am really looking to go for a 98, but are there any specific things to look for on the car besides the basics

anything unique about volvos to look for, or the v70 AWD to look for

thanks a lot

  • 3 weeks later...

hey guys

im really looking into buying the car for my friend

she was recently in an accident and lost control of her car

she and her parents want her to get a volvo (safety) with AWD (control)

would the difference of getting an XC or just the AWD have any difference at all? (driving and control wise, i know cosmetically they are different)

any help on this would be great

I think the only AWD V70 in 98 were V70R and XC70.

98 LPT V70 AWD's were also available. Make sure that the wheels were rotated every 3k miles, check the treadware on the tires to make sure they are all equal. If the treadware isn't close to being equal, stay away from the car. Due to the treadware not being equal, it causes the awd system to burn up, which is a lot of money to repair. The XC's feature a raised frame compared to the regular V70 AWD's.

NOOOO, R wagon. by the way, why do people still think that AWD Volvos are much easier cars to control?

well witha title like AWD it makes them appear so

i was under the impression

OK so out of wagons in a $10k budget..what car has the most control?

(and did volvo ever stop putting SRS airbags in becasue those are most important)

they all have SRS bags, except for like some of the 91's(they might even have them for all i know) just find a 850R and be done with it. AWD's are too much to keep up

98 was the first year with the all wheel drive system so I wouldn't go with a 98 I would go with a newer volvo even with the etm problems just make sure the car you get already has it's etm replaced.

Or

I would 90 with a 98 t-5 wagon sweet car I live in boston and have snows on all 4 and have no problems getting through the snow.

heres the thing...i have a v70t-5M but the person im buying this for NEEDS the most control...its kind of an issue but if FWD has more control and is more reliable (or even the same in both cases) then ill tell her that and its not big deal...i just gotta make sure you know?
