Car Running Cooler Than Normal

Volvo Virgin

Recommended Posts

Just installed an XC grill in my S70 that I scored from Zag,and about the same time my car starting running cooler. Not sure how much due to the lack of a numerically calibrated temp guage, but I can say that for the past year it ususally runs dead on the center line of the guage. Now it is running 1.5 lines below that.Obviously the XC grill is less restrictive so I'm surmising more cool air is making it through the grill to the radiator and intercooler.Anyone else have a similar experience,or am I developing a thermostat issue?By the way, heat blows hot as hell as usual,no change there.

The grill probably shouldn't change that. The thermostat is controlling how much water gets to the radiator, so it could be the start of a problem there, or the temp sensor. Probably not enough to be too concerned about it, but keep an eye on the temp gauge.

agreed, no correlation.

The funny thing is,after driving it this morning, this only seems to be occurring at highway speeds.Around town it is right in the middle where it always is.I've had cars/trucks in the past that I've either blocked the grill or opened it up more to cool or heat the radiator more. Not to doubt you guys, but the eggcrate is so much less restrictive than the stock grill, and the fact that it only happens at highway speeds when more air is obviously being forced thru the grill makes me wonder

I have 98 S70 and it also has just started running cooler. I talked to my Volvo mechanic and he told me if I did'nt change the thermostat soon that it would burn up the head gasket!

That condition is almost always what happens when a t-stat is stuck open.

I for one did not notice it when driving in town, but on the freeway, the temp gauge dipped down to the 5 o'clock mark.

I didn't modify the grill from what Zag sent me.When you say backing do you mean the piece of plastic with all the little sqaures that is on the back of the eggcrate?

I guess the smart thing to do is change the thermostat.I looked at my car and it appears the thermostat is at the end of the upper radiator hose on the block.Any surprises?

yeah, there are some torx bolts T40 i think that hold it in there, you need a long T40 bit and don't strip them out. use some penetrating oil like PB blaster.

nahh, you need a flathead screwdriver.. break the tabs, throw the piece in the trash. :)

yup, ditch that.

Burn up the head gasket when the car is running cooler?
