rodrigo
I posted here a while back with a couple of codes my XC was dishing out. At the time, I did not have too much time to look into the remedy for these codes and took the car to my trusty mechanic. After 4 visits (no charge), and the codes coming up again, I have had it, and before I go to the dealer with it (still under warranty) I figured I would try and fix it myself...now I have time (but the temprature is -freezing...yey me!) So here are the codes the scan tool is pumping out:P0422 P1174What are they?I am reasonably mechanically inclined, but I have no idea what these codes mean, and how to diagnose them, as codes can be from a variety of things in the same circuit, from what I have read here.I have noticed no driveability issues with the car, but I dont wanna drive it too much if the light is on since, to me, it should not be on in the first place.TIA for your helps! the underlørd
The possible letters are P (Powertrain), B (Body), C (Chassis) and U (Network Communications). The first digit is either a 0 or a 1 and indicates the type of code, 0 (generic), 1 (proprietary, i.e, defined by the manufacturer). The second digit should be between 1 and 8 and indicates the system affected by the fault: 1 (Air/Fuel control), 2 (fuel system), 3 (Ignition), 4 (Auxiliary Emission controls such as EGR, CAT), 5 (Vehicle Speed/Idle Control); 6 (Computer systems), 7 (Transmission or transaxle), 8 (Transmission or transaxle). The last two digits are generally looked at together and are the specific code number for the particular fault. P0422 - Catalyst System Low Efficiency Bank 1 P1174. - That "P" code 1174 equates to a Volvo code 260A. 260A is for long term fuel trim, could be caused by intake or exhaust leaks, a bad O2 sensor, or a bad MAF (mass air flow sensor). Hard to tell with out knowing if the code was for high or low limits, lots of times it's because of the MAF. It seems to be a very common code! It seems to be a very common code! Thanks Kev!Well, you have answered my question, but I would like a little clarification:should I look at the codes as separate entities, or individually...or...is one code making another go off (and vi/ve) or are they completey independent? What does Catalyst systemlow effeiciency bank 1 mean (P0422) ? Ineed a new cat or is it ineffecient due to improper readings from the front/rear O2 Sensors?P1174: 260A is for long term fuel trim, could be caused by intake or exhaust leaks, a bad O2 sensor, or a bad MAF (mass air flow sensor). rodrigo
the car has 45k, I am assuming the O2's are original.Gas mileage is fine...26,24 on highway

rodrigo
93 all the time, no matter what, no matter what price, and everycar I have had since 2000 I have no driveability issues. I hooked up the old boost gauge and was at the norm my old 850 was...19 or so at iddle. Gas mileage is fine...same as the old 850...and a little worse since it is winter, but I get 24 mpg/26 mpg with no problems cruising at 65-75mph. rodrigo
I guess I'll drive and see if/when the codes come on again...then I'll call up and see when they have an opening to check it out.If anyone else has any ideas, feel free to jump in :D
starfish
A catalyst efficiency failure maybe caused by leaking exhaust manifold gaskets or a bad cat. Check for signs of leakage around the cylinder head like black soot. The cat has a 8year/80,000 mile warranty.
rodrigo
will do. tomorrow when the sun is out I will open her up and whip out the mirror on a stick and inspect that back there.
the underlørd
will do. tomorrow when the sun is out I will open her up and whip out the mirror on a stick and inspect that back there.a leak would be fairly obvious, however with the heatshield on there, it'll be kinda hard to see. :(
rodrigo
Oh, come on, Kev...give me a little credit...I have hand tools All kidding aside, though, I did have an infamous Jeep Cherokee with an infamous exhaust leak, and it was loud!..FFT, FFT, FFT, FFT, FFT, FFT...annoying as hell! The XC does not do that, though...the engine is quite 'soundless' for a Volvo...smooth, not noisy...it does have a little vibration, but I think it is from it being -3 DegC and having a Poly top mount.Oh, I forgot, I have to get it inspected today since the CEL is erased I'm about 2 weeks overdue
