2000 S40 Driving Us Crazy.....

Well my wife has a 2000 S40 that has been giving us alot of trouble lately. Besides the constant rattles of noise we have found a bigger problem. When driving the car and its either going down the road or your accelerating after a red light or stop sign the car acts like it is clogged up or like your letting on and off the gas. Its becoming very dangerous and annoying. What could this be????? I am planning on changing the fuel filter and checking the spark plugs but besides that I am LOST. I think it could be something with the fuel line or system because she has been getting AWFUL gas mileage. If anyone can help I would be very greatful!!!! Thanks in advance

Rattles and noises are often caused by a bad right motor mount or front stabilizer bushings. Poor acceleration and low gas mileage can be related to a leaking fuel pressure regulator. You will need to remove the regulators vacuum hose while the engine is running. The gas is probably leaking into the vacuum line versus an external leak.

How many miles??? I would do a tune, plugs ,air and fuel(filter located under car) but I would also clean the throttle housing (as suggested ) But you may simply have an intake leak which should set a code? Do you have a CEL? (check engine light) It may not though.. it could also be as suggested fuel leaking past the regulator, but I would look for vacuum/intake leaks and do a good tune unless you have a CEL ;)
