scubthebub
so here is the story:drove car hard, and it drove kinda rough with an CEL light on that got worse. Took it to dealership and they replaced the turbo control valve, MAF sensor, and one of the temp sensors. They told me i jacked the O2 sensors and cat and asked for $1400 to fix it. I ordered a Bosch OEM front sensor and replaced it, but i could tell something was still not right. Finally got a CEL and the code told me it's too rich on bank 1. I'm getting smoke out the tailpipe again and don't want to pay for another O2 sensor so the car is just sitting. Any suggestions?98 S70 GLT with about 112k miles

mikie
Several months ago I got a code P0172 "running too rich bank 1", brought my car to the dealers and they replaced the control valve and today I got the same code? I already have an appointment on thursday so we'll see what they have to say...

But the problem didn't go away after the O2 was replaced. hope they are not cheating us

Last night I got pissed at someone on the road, they were in my way, so I passed them by hitting the gas, while I was attempting this I hit some ice and I was in the redline for several seconds. Next day the light turned on... I will let you know what happens at the dealer.

The black smoke gives it away too.

mikie
Alright so volvo read the codes and said that I need a new maf, once again. The last maf I got was just over a year. So they are playing on cleaning it since it shouldn't go bad so quickly and see what happens from there. I don't know the cause but if it fails again I am going to try to single out a cause - removing the K&N! What about this AEM dryflow filter, does anyone if there is a panel filter replacement for our cars?
scubthebub
Alright so volvo read the codes and said that I need a new maf, once again.hm... they just replaced mine, better not be bad already. How do you determine what sensor is going bad when all i get is a cel that tells me that i'm running rich. looks like i need to take it to dealer again <_<
MakGT
dude, if you are only running rich on one bank, check for sparks!. Take out the spark plugs, read them! Check your wires, cap, rotor and plugs, $125 can change a lot of things. If your car is blowing black smoke, most likely your car is running fuel or oil

Trunks850R
i think bank is referring to the o2 sensor not a cylinder bank one is the first 02 sensor before the convertor. if its bad your car wont run right, but that wont effect the boost(it doesnt on my 95 T5)
scubthebub
bank one is the first 02 sensor before the convertor. if its bad your car wont run right, but that wont effect the boost(it doesnt on my 95 T5)but the 02 sensor is new, Bosch OEM direct fit. Even after replacing the sensor it still ran a little funny. i think it is running rich, which triggered the cel, but something else is causing it. MadeInJapan
MAF? Other 02 sensor? They may actually be right about the Cat. Does the smoke smell like rotten eggs?

The black smoke gives it away too.If you're not experiencing a noticeable performance loss under load, I wouldn't suppect that you've damaged your cat. Forgive me if you've already done it, but I didn't see you mention it. Did you clear the CEL and reset the PCM (fuse or battery) to reset the adaptives? Also, if you've pulled a "too rich" code, then the brain is doing its best to shorten the injector pulse width. If you're still seeing a rich (black) exhaust, then I'd check to verify that you're really getting complete combustion.
