Sub And Amp Enclosures On My 98 V70

ok so ive been wondering how to put in a sub and amp so that the 3rd row is still functionable, can access spare tire, and is protected from any sort of water damage or other impact damage

the idea is a cross between bing's set up (sub located underneath a plexiglass enclosure with carpeted wood insert)

and between another idea i saw (utilizing the side panels behind the wheel wells)

my idea is to put a sub in the passinger pannel (described above) with a plexiglass top cover and wood insert

and on the drivers side do the same but with my amp (this may not be possible but its still an idea right now)

i have to still look up dimensions of a sub i want and i have a sony xplod amp and must measure it (upon arriving home because a tree fell on our power line and im at my uncles)

Specific questions:

Bing: How did you specifically make the carpeted wood insert be able to stay secure? I specifically want a stock look and would like to have the cargo mat on top most of the time without scratching the plexiglass.

How did you watertight your plexiglass case while still being able to reach and adjust things? I will normally have my mat on, but in cases that I do not, i may use the car for something that will have some damp items and i need something that will protect the contents of the case, but obviously I don't need it to be submerged and still be fine.

If this doesn't work, which I will know within the next few days after working with some measurements and doing some creative thinking, then I will probably build boxes on both sides, having the same use of the trunk but just having my original plan raised a few inches into the air. If I do this, which direction would be optimal for subwoofer direction?

I am working with numbers to either create an enclosure or getting a baffle for the 8" sub I'll be using, and any suggestions on brands would be good (if theres a difference).

Thank you for all of the help and hopefully this will turn out as good as i keep imaging it.

i am not quite understanding, i dont have any plexi in my install...what are you referring to as wood insert?

b

sorry if i was not specific ( i just reread and i dont think that i understood YOUR setup)

you dont have any plexiglass and i just noticed that now, i thought that you had a thin layer just about your sub and your equalizer and amp

i was mistaken

the "wood insert" i was refering to is the removable piece that you put over your sub, amp, and equilizer to cover and protect it

any more info on your setup or help would be great

thanks

i wont have this project underway or anything until after next wednesday due to finals and midterms

i was looking for suggestions for subs, and not just like WHAT BRAND is the best, but what will work well with the sony xplod amp i have (ive read the post on sony xplod amps and it was too late, ive had it for a few months)

its this one

now my guess is a 10" running at 4 ohms and 250watts

heres a weird question, depending on the sub that i get, is there anywhere that i could find out or learn about the amount of square feet of air that needs to be directly behind the subwoofer to displace the correct amount of air....AND will i need to make ported holes for it if i do this?

i think i might get a friend to PS my idea and ill be measuring and stuff to figure it out

anyone that can lend a hand to any section of my post is greatly appreciated....oh and just tell me either what good brands there are...and if it doesnt matter too much, then which ones really i should NOT get

ive been doing some research and have found some good things and realized about my cubic feet are etc.

ive been reading on here that having a rear facing sub in a wagon can add so much to its sound. is this suggested, and if so, then im still supposed to dynamat the general area inwhich the subwoofer is?

also, on crutchfield they are having a sale where 2 10" 250w infinity reference subs are for the price of one...89 for both

this is them

opinions about this/these subs

i have a 250w amp at 4ohms and was wondering if i should sell it and get a better one (its actually never been used AND its a sony xplod)

could i maybe have some suggestions...im like most people and want good tight bass, and i dont really want bass that wakes the neighbors

thanks guys

EDIT: if i end up getting both subs, i would obviously need a new amp, would i get one for each sub, or can you run 2x300w in sub mode or can you bridge a 4x100 to get 2x250? (im not knowledgeable about this)

Try the Infinity Basslink (which can be found at cardomain.com). Depending on which one you get it's great for any small installation. Only 250 or 200 watts though so if your craving more check out Image Dynamics subs there too. AND REMEMBER, always pricematch your products so you can get the best price from cardomain.

It all depends on how much wattage you want running to it, if you can be more specific I can help more.

If you want the best sound get Image Dynamics, luckily they also work best in small enclosures. Check out their website at http://www.imagedynamicsusa.com/public_release/ and price match their subs at http://www.mmxpress.com/id.html

I think these are the greatest subs out their for Sound Quality, but not for ear shattering bass. I own two of the ID8's and they are mounted free air in the back deck of my S70 both at 150watts RMS and they are incredibly nice.

i think im gunna go a 250w 10" sub

should this be rear facing, upwards facing, front, or to the otherside of the car?

im looking for optimal sound, not blast the neighbors and i am gunna dynamat the area anyway

ive heard rear facing is the best...anyone wanna give an opinion

id like to start working on the enclosure this weekend

thanks

Bing0 ... which is like the audio god here recommends rear facing. If I had to do it over again, I'd do it that way. He has some fancy smancy name ... corner loading :D

dual voice coil is better correct?

i know the answer is probably yes based on rough knowledge of physics (and i just took the midterm)

but when you run electrons through a primary to a secondary coil the load creates a larger magnetic field

which i think yields way better sound

bing_0?

EDIT: Also, when using "corner loading", do i remove the actual carpeted pannel to achieve the 2-3 inches clearance needed, and i should dynamat that area if i am correct?

Dynamat is always good, but removing panels is not completely necessary. Bing will correct me if i'm wrong.

As for SVC v. DVC, Dual Voice Coils allow greater wiring flexibility and usually offer higher power handling. It does not affect sound all that much.

if i recall correctly the SVC vs. DVC goes as this a svc is more efficient than a dvc, yes a dvc offers more options but yeilds a less efficient motor structure, meaning, more power to move the same distance, if memory serves me correctly... bing??? also its not just magnetics we are dealing with, it is motors, resistance, air pressure and many other forces
