ALright i have a couple of questions amout my volvo. What does sport mode do to your engine that makes your car go faster. Does it put more oil into the engine like a vtech? And when i am racing someone going 50 ish and take the car out of drive and put the car into 3rd gear the sport mode and stuff lights go off. DOes this mean the sport mode is off, is this harmful to my transmision. does it make the car move faster?

Thanks guys

I have a 98 S70, and when i put it into 3 it does the same thing. volvo has safety features that come from the factory and thats one of them. if you put it into 3 or L, then it goes into wet or winter mode, the W near the shifter and the orange arrow on the dash will light up. dont kno if its bad for the transmission but when you shift into 3 and the light changes sport mode is off. The sport mode works with the tranny, not the engine. it lets you shift at higher rpms to get more power out of the gears, but it uses more gas. atleast thats what the manual says.

wow i never knew that vtec "put more oil" into the engine, which made more power? and sport mode DOES NOTHIGN for power, it merely changes the shift points and downshift points on the transmission to allow you to get into higher rpm's. doesnt save gas at all

and by the way, you bought a TOTALED GLT for 5500? i would be pissed cause you just got OWNED

Not sure about the 98s, but going into 3 or L does NOT put you into winter mode. The arrow simply indicates that you are in a lower gear, or in winter mode. Econ mode might save you some fuel, but really it is more of a function of your right foot than the shift points.

You will know when you go into winter mode. It is like a huge loss of power down low, at least for the HPT cars.

Yeah.

Putting the gear selector into 3 while driving will disengage overdrive... it will bump your rpms up, thus making it feel like more power... but not.

The winter mode will start your car in 3rd gear (when placed in drive). When the gear selector is in the 3 position (and winter mode is still active) you will be in second gear. And when in low it will be in 1st gear.

Vtech If I recall Correctly does not add any oil, I don't know wtf you are talking about.

you are correct, vtec does not put more oil into the engine, it uses oil pressure controlled by a solenoid to raise lifter, which then engage larger lobes on the cam or cams, thus increasing the time and distance that the valves open. This is why motors with vtec can rev so high, because it is almost like having a whole other motor. hope i cleared up the questions about that

not totaled it was in a wreck i probably need to change that. but the car drives perfect. it was rebuilt

Does it have a salvage title? If it has a salvage title, then that is not good :(.

I must say though, your car is pretty clean. Shiney paint.

Winter Mode doesn't start the car in 1st gear, it uses 3rd gear, that is why you don't have much power to the wheels. Helps prevents slipping as winter mode would indicate. The Orange arrow indicates as zappo said.

Maybe they couldn't match the paint after the accident and painted the whole car

george I beleiev hinted at the fact that power downlow is lost. Which would mean the car is starting in a higher gear.... so i think he was right.

I would think racing the car in 3 and throwing it back into Drive would be bad for the transmission. Just leave it in Sport and you should be fine. Econ saves gas by setting the shift points at a lower rpm as other people have stated. Sport puts those points higher. I think everything has been covered here.
