stevec
I changed my power steering pump due to it acting like it was shot. After bleeding the air out it seemed to be working fine. Then the next day it (the steering) was stiff again. Now it works fine for a little while and becomes stiff again. No, I didn't put a limp dick in the fluid. Does anybody have any suggestions. Could there still be some air trapped in the system somewhere? If so how do I bleed it out? Steve C.
Bay13
After driving for a few days all the air is out. That only leaves the steering rack as the source of resistance.
kenk
make sure you remembered to put the oring between the resoviour and the ps pump. i forgot mine, slow slow leak, but made it next to impossible to bleed. ;-) ended up with 1qt of atf fluid on the driveway. OPS. lol. make sure the output to the rack is tight. (metal hose on front)I also had trouble bleeding, following the haynees tips helped a lot. Bleed first on jack stands, then lower, going from lock to lock..... holding for 5 seconds at each extreme. Going back to dead center from each lock, wait 10 seconds at center to recover. If your not maxing it out at the very ends on a ramp its pretty hard to get all the air out from just driving at least it was for me, reason for this is probably its hard to get full full extreme on the ground with the resistance the tires create. also is the steering smooth, but still, or does it jump while being stiff... when the system isnt bled properly it tends to jump, also if you open the ps pump resoviour you'll probably see foam or bubbles. stevec
Kenk,I didn't forget the O-ring and I did bleed the system according to the Haynes manual. All the bubbles are gone from the res. The steering is smooth not jumpy. I priced out a steering rack today and it's a good thing I was sitting down. The cheapest price I found was $244.00 from my neighborhood parts store. I called the dealer but they were busy and promised to call me back but I never heard back from them. I only wanted to see how much it was at the dealer to make me feel better about the $244.00. I can imagine they will say it's five or six hundred bucks. Thanks for the input. It is appreciated. Steve
