Msd Ignition Set Ups

1st, let me say, dont even bother telling me to search. I did, and came up with over 30 pages of almost useless information like:

"Should I get a new coil"

"MSD vs Accel"

"Where to mount new coil"

And a couple of "Oh sn4p d0G, I fuXor3D mY c4P y0!"

I found one post that contained a small amount of what might be considered really usefull information.

Since reading a recent thread about MSD 6A boxes and have now aquired a MSD 6A I am going to install it on my car. Along with a MSD Coil. But through all my searching I could not find the right MSD part # for the proper coil. Does anyone have the part # or a link to the right one.

My main concern with running the box and not having an HEI style distributor cap is the fairly high probability of cross firing between points on the cap. And since no one makes anything like that for a Volvo its kind of dicey as to how long the factory one will last. apparently from what I found in the searching I did is either it happens or it doesnt. My guess is that it depends on the condition of your factory cap.

The other thing I found is that the wire running from the coil to the cap is not a standard line. Who do I need to talk to to get one of those made?

And for plug wires, its pretty common knowlege that running the magnacore wires that are available for our cars is nothing more than a cometic mod on a factory ignition system. But if you run a box and coil that are producing a much larger charge, you would need more wire to run the spark through. So would there be a benifit to the larger wires with a complete system?

Well color me surprised! Vendor markup.. say it ain't so!

(sorry.. I don't mean to be a jackass. Ignore the sarcasm)

I take you were able to find the p/n then?

Vendor mark up is one thing but raking your customers over the coals is another. We are talking a 91.00 mark up.

I didnt find the part #. When I saw the picture of it I was pretty sure which one it was. Its a fairly common universal coil in EFI set ups.

boyce, remember..

1. sometimes people struggle.

2. doing homework is a rarity.

3. Franks comes with a bracket! (at least i think it does)

1) I do not accept that as a viable response, does not compute. Now get ready to be chimp slapped.

2) Dont they teach kids how to do that in school now days?

3) Yeah, I saw that. That is one expensive itsy bitsy piece of sheet metal. Hmmmmm, lemme see if I can find my dremel and a drill.

I have the EST kit. You have to hammer your existing bracket flat.

Well that answers that. Over pay 91.00 AND you get to hammer the poo out of your own parts.

Since thats figured out, I gave EST a call to see if they offer the coil wire by itself. No answer, hopefully they will call back.

Remember, Franks in eastern canada... so its 5:15pm... don't get mad if he doesn't call.

That I didnt know. So maybe he'll call tommorow. I dont see why he wouldnt offer the wire as a seperate unit. I dont think MSD makes this as a standard coil wire. Its probably a universal wire kit that they put together in house. Down side to that is that it allows for even more mark up.

OK, just so you guys know that same coil is listed on summit racing for 38.00

I do know, because that is where I got mine. :) Jake has the EST one. With the Summit one, you have to make your own mounting bracket and coil wire, but it does come with the boot for the wire for the coil side.
