Msd Ignition Set Ups

I do know, because that is where I got mine. :) Jake has the EST one. With the Summit one, you have to make your own mounting bracket and coil wire, but it does come with the boot for the wire for the coil side.

what boot and connector did you use on the distributor side?

I dont think so. According to a couple posts in the search I did earlier the Volvo uses a non standard connector that locks onto the ditributor cap. So you have to find the right connector, spare wire and boot then build it. Its not hard to make them, I have done it a number of times but finding the right connector might be a bear.

The coil that u can use is a MSD Blaster SS coil, i got mine for like 29 bucks off ebay, the bracket needs to be handmade, a simple task with some sheet metal, some screws and a dremel. The coil comes with a boot and a metal connector, its a simple crimp job that takes 10 minutes and a steady hand.

What about just buying one of their 8.5mm kits for a 6-cyl or 8-cyl? You could make custom spark plug wires just reusing stock boots, and a custom coil wire same way.

Are you connecting it to the factory coil wire or are you using and MSD wire?

That would work but would be spendy for just one coil wire. I dont know if they make a long socket kit for cars with plugs that are burried half way into the motor. If they do, I can garagntee its going to be a hell of alot more expensive than a standard kit.

I am going to be on the phone with both mallory and MSD about caps. I am pretty sure that niether of them make a cap for our cars but its worth a check.

Sorry, I figured you could make spark wires at the same time if you didn't already have a set. If you didn't, yea, that would be way too spendy.

BTW, let me know if they need some proof of an automotive related business, or will give a discount in that case

I chopped off the end of the factory coil wire, and put the MSD supplied boot and metal connector on it.

did the same thing to mine. ghetto rigged the mount tho (excited to go see the difference, owned friend's lsvtec teg that walked on me the night b4 B) ), jammed it under the airbox n double sided tape did the trick  .

I got the MSD Blaster from Summit for around $40. Long before EST carried it. Another guy on this board made a bracket for me, while he was making his own. Which worked ok. But then I put in the EST intake and didn't like the tight fit. So I just used the rubber mounting hardware that comes with the coil and mounted it to the heat shield. Plent of room right there.

I called Magnacor and they gladly made me a custom coil wire for about $18 plus shipping. 8.5mm wire with MSD boot on one end and Volvo boot on the other.

that is what I did also. I had a spare coil wire, so I can always switch back to the stock coil if I have to.

Did you order it? If not get back with them and find out what it would take to to a psuedo "group buy". I am sure at 18.00 there would be more than a few people interested.

Side note.

I called MSD and they said "nope, no volvo stuff". So I asked what it would take to produce and HEI styled cap for the 850/70 series cars. he put me in touch with the sales and marketing people. On Monday i will be chatting with them to see what it would take to get them to develop a volvo dist. cap and rotor. And possibly a box that will support 5 cyl operation with rev control and window switches for nitrous users.

I will say to get them to do it is going to take some serious work and some serious commitment from the volvo COMMUNITY. So if they say "yeah, we will do it" and I get one of the vendors to carry it (and I know they will) and get a GP going. The wallets better be ready. None of this "oh yeah I am in" and then the day comes and everyone backs out.

Regarless, I'll be first in line.

This is what I did,

From,

Thats pretty trick Johann, but did EST supply you with those nice fabbed brackets or did you have to do it yourself?

That bracket looks slick Johann, nice!

I just mounted mine inside the heat shield. I pushed it all the way to one side to leave room the new catch can I'm putting in. The two leads are long enough to reach that spot, no problems.

Needless to say, I'd suggest getting a LONGER coil lead. I'm not real happy about mine sitting where it is. But that was before I put the EST intake in. Oh well, it works fine.

It has been on his car for a few years now. I doubt there would be enough interest for a GB.
