Bilstein Tcs

I have some Bilstein TCs on the rear of my 98 S70 that I installed about 18 months ago. In the past few months, I've noticed a cluncking sound that I've isolated to the rear shocks. I get the cluncking on smooth road surfaces when the shock is moving very slightly. I've seen other posts on this forum about this issue. Anyone else have this issue or any additional information?

I called Bilstein about replacing them, but their warranty return policy is a pain in the butt and I'm afraid even if I put in a new pair they'll end up doing the same thing after a few months.

Rubber bump stops sometimes fall into the springs on the rear of these cars. Bay13 has a good write-up on this with pictures. Sort of a pain, but I hope this is your problem and not something else. It this is it, I have a couple of pins that hold these up that I'll send you for the price of postage. Just write me badger36-at-knology.net

by the way, I also have Bilstein TC's all around and not a bit of a problem.

Thanks for the info. I had done my homework and checked the bump stops and the mounting hardware. Even putting extra washers under the top mount. I guess I have a defective pair. I was just curious how widespread the problem is and judging from the response to my post, I would say it's not a real common problem.

You may have a upper shock mount that is torn causing the shock to slap in the mount, hence the clunking noise. I had this problem on my front right shock. When I replaced the shock, I also replaced the shock mount and the noise went away.

Also, I am going to be replacing the rear shocks.

How do you get to the top mount. to remove the existing shocks. I have not attempted the process yet, but was hoping for some feedback so I can save some time.

What's w/ putting washers under the top mount?

I've noticed that since it's gotten cold, mine seem to be making a lot of noise also. About 3 months ago i replaced basically the entire suspension w/ bilstien hd's...springs, mounts, control arm, tie rod end, hardware, etc... and they were quiet at first. The sound is way better than it was w/ the bad ball joints though.

Thanks for the suggestions: I did change out the shock mounts when I replaced the shocks and they still look good. As far as the washers on the top for the shock mount; there was a post earlier that talked about some Bilstein TCs that didn't have the thread cut far enough down on the top end of the shock and the nut would bottom out before the shock was socked down tight, causing it to clunk.

As far as removing the upper shock mount; fold down your rear seats and lift up the carpet piece that's over the shocks. You'll see the mount and the two bolts that are holding it. The bolts go through to open space on the underside of the car so they can get pretty rusted up. If you can hit them with some PB Blaster before hand it helps a lot.

Thanks for the tips - I forgot to mention that I have a C70; so I think I either need to remove the rear seat or go through the trunk and remove the trim in the trunk....
