Does anyone have any clue if I can use Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF in my 2002 S60 2.4T with geartronic tranny? The dealer says use genuine Volvo ATF only, but this stuff is hella expensive...They want $400 for the service. What are my options? Thanks Ruftek

if you are still with a warranty stick with the volvo brand. it is 15 bucks a litre and you would have them use 12 to 16 litres for a full flush. it would take about an hour. my dealer says about 320. i get a 10% discount because i belong to volvo club of america. the reg price is 17x12=204 + 130 an hour = 334. so marginally they are in the park, but, high.

the real news is that the fluid is jws3309 and made by Mobil. it is available for 4 bucks a quart so even with the dealer labor it would be under 200 bucks. it is the same fluid.

the mobil 1 could void your warranty and i do not know if it has the specific "friction modifiers" required for the volvo asin warner 55-50 transmission. if it is not with the right chemistry it could be harmfull to the tranny.

not my 2 cents; i spent a week searching, talking to Mobil tech people, friends in sweden who work at volvo. and this is my best advice.

According to the latest Volvo released information, The JWS 3309 is the only recomended fluid approved for all of their 5 and 6 speed automatic transmissions period. None of the other current fluids have been evaluated by Volvo to meet the requirements of these specific transmissions regarding: Shift quality, Slipping lock-up functionality and Transmission durability.

This fluid is also recommended to address two complaints on the AW 5-42: Harsh Lock-Up engagement/disengagement on 1998-2000 S,V70, AWD, V70 XC. and a squeeking noise during low speed turns on 1998-2000 AWD/XC models.

I have seen nothing but grey when it comes to whether or not the Mobil ATF fluid is JWS3309 compatible. Even looking at the Mobil website has not cleared up this matter.

So, when in doubt, use Mobil 1 synthetic in your automatic transmission. Or Dexron III if you have the long tranny dipstick (15 and 1/2 inchs) and if you have the short tranny dipstick (9 inches ), you can use the Volvo synthetic or the Mobil 1 3309 specs synthetic (since they are the same). And Mobil makes the synthetic fluid for Volvo.

Do not confuse ATF with Mobil 1 3309.

Bob, I am not trying to nitpick here and please don't take this as criticism, but it sounds like you might be the one that has the two fluids confused.

Mobil 1 ATF = synthetic Dexron III and is not appropriate for the newer 5-speed Asin Warner transmissions

Mobil 3309 = conventional non-synthetic AFAIK = Volvo approved fluid (per Starfish above) for the newer 5-speed Asin Warner transmissions.

You should make sure that the right fluid is used for the right transmission. You should not have any doubts before you change the fluid. You can shorten the life of your transmission if you make the wrong choice. So, if I may modify your statement, I would say when in doubt, you should leave the fluid changes to the professionals.

Here is a link to Mobil's website describing the two products.

When I was looking for Mobil 3309 a little more than a year ago it was only available around here (Northeast) through regional distributors of lubricants. I was able to purchase it by the case for about $4 a quart. I drove to the distributor to avoid shopping charges. I have yet to see in local auto parts stores.

ah hah! I've had big problems with enaging/disengaging gears with my 98 C70.

I was wondering which fluid to use for a flush, but now I know :)

You might want to confirm the assumption that JWS 3309 is applicable to an automatic transmission in a '98 C70. My the volvo parts program DVD says that the proper fluid for that year in Dexron IIE or Ford Mercon.....

Bill

Hmm.. does anyone here know if it is compatible?

C/S/V70 tranny is the same isn't it?
