Air Vent Problems

Just checking if anyone else has had this problem on their 2001+ V70s.

I hear strange motorized sound and clicking noises from the front passenger side when I drive. My amature detective work yielded the following symptoms

- It sounds just like the sound of the doors moving inside the air vent when you turn the fan off and on. Similar sound is made when you turn on recirculate on/off.

- The sound seems to occur just before shifting. I manually shift the Geartronic usually at ~2300 RPMs (2.3L high pressure turbo engine)

- The sound seems to also occur as I gradually brake to a stop.

- If I turn on recirculation, the sound disappears.

- I did put the car in neutural and briefly reved the engine to 2400 RPM. No sounds/noises.

I remember cars long ago supply power via engine vacume to operate these air vent doors. Was wondering if vacume is my problem based on what seems to be a relationship between the noise occuring and the engine speed.

Has anyone had this problem before?

I was able to remove the glove compartment and get to the air vent actuator that is causing this problem. It is the right most actuator just below the passenger airbag. This job is not so easy, very tight space for hand and screw driver + a couple of linkages between the motor and vents that are very difficult to reconnect.

When I drive the car, I can see the actuator turning back and forth slightly from time to to time without me touching any input control. My AC, fan and recirculate is off. If recirculate is on, this actuator rotates to the other position and doesn't act up.

There are 3 additional actuators behind the center console and they don't have any problems. I can see one of these actualtor is clearly connected to the same black ribbon (4 wires) and 1 red wire as the actuator that is acting up. Can anyone with a 01 V70 wiring diagram tell me if these 2 actuator gets the same 5 power+signal wires? If this is the case, then the culprit is probably the actuator itself.

The markings on the actuator that is acting up are as follows

Anyone with any info for further diagnostics would be greatly appreciated.

An update on this problem

This problem first occured after a front brake pad replacement at the dealer. But I can't see how these 2 are related.

What I've done is the following

- Disconnected the electrical connection to this stepper motor

This stepper motor opens/closes a vent behind the glove compartment for air recirculation. So I've just left it in fresh air mode.

Now I no longer have this steppermotor hunting around when the car cross 20-30mph and have to accept fresh air into the cabin at all times which is what we use all the time anyways.

I had heard to correct this may involve

- replacing the stepper motor

- reprogram the motors at the dealer

So I took the much lower cost solution that doesn't impact our usage of the car.

Worst case I'd suspect the stepper motor.  Best case is a damper motor calibration might work.  Next time you are in there ask them to do a damper motor cal.

I have a similar problem but I would describe the sound a little differently. I get the flashing AC/Recirc lights when I start the car but then there is a sound in the dash like sqeaky bedsprings when your upstairs neghbors are getting it on, and on, and on......

Could this bedspring noise be vents opening and closing repeatedly? My AC is cold and does not go warm at all.

My blower motor sounds noisier than it should also. No grinding our screaching but just noisier.

And another thing, I can't find the cabin temp sensors that are supposed to be behind the grab handles above the door. Where else could they be?
