Driving A 2006 S60 2.5t.....

So I put my S70 in the body shop yesterday to get the rear bumper damage fixed, and when I called for a rental they had an S60 available.Bring it on I figure. As far as I can tell 208HP 2.5 turbo. The car's an auto 5-spd,and has alot of power out of the hole with absoutely none of the sluggishness of my auto.It will actually smoke the tires from a dead stop with the wheels pointed straight and the STC turned off.I think alot of it may have to do with gearing as it doesn't pull as hard up top like my car does, and the 70-100MPH is definitely a bit slower than my car.You can barely feel the trans shift, which I personally don't particularly like, but that's a luxo car deal I guess.Car handles really well also.I was sliding it around exit ramp cloverleafs like a seasoned drifter.LOL.Breakaway is very predictable, and easy to correct and drive thru the slide.Obviuosly a smaller car than the S,with reduced rear seating.

I'm still looking for more input on the 2002 S60 T5 2.3 auto-trans,as I can get a pretty good deal on one right now.My last thread didn't get much feedback.Come on guys, help me out here.I do love my S,and am aware of the 850 and 70 series loyalty, but what about some serious opinions from people with knowledge of the S60 with regards to reliability, durability, weak spots, ease of owner maintenance/repairs,and ease of modifications compared to the 70's.

Rob,

I'm going through the same decision right now. My S is in the body shop too (for front end damage) and I am trying to figure out if I should run it into the ground when I get it back or spring for an '04 T5 or R. The prices are still high on that year but if I drive my '98 into the ground over the bext year I could probably pick one up later.

I've done a little research and the '01 and '02 seem to have some gremlins and the engine internals are not going to hold up to significant modding. In '04 I know the R was built with stronger rods and pistons but I'm not sure about the T5.

My 2 year plan right now is to drive the '98 until next year, pick up a used '04 R, and then get as close to the IPD V70R 425hp build as I can. A guy has to have goals right?

Eric

Yeah I heard the 01 S60's were a stay away from year, but I was hoping that someone could tell me if the 02 S60 T5 was any better, and was the 2.3 in the T5 the same as the older 01 and prior 2.3 HPT motors. Anybody know the answer to those questions,or own an 02 S60?

I just got the '06 V70 2.5t - same engine but dragging a bit more weight. You wouldn't know the difference, though. High power curve right off the line, and it doesn't drop off until about 70 or 80. Volvo's got these new engines DIALED IN. I haven't tried anything with the STC off, but I have yet to long for more power in this car. I thought my 98 GLT was smooth, but this one's like butter in a Teflon pan. The R was a strong temptation, but not worth the extra $5K since I usually drive like an old lady anyway :)

my volvo mechanic told me he loves new volvos........ until the warrenty is up

Yeah..a definite concern since this one has low miles but is just out of warranty due to 4 years old.An aftermarket warranty would probably be wise then,if I do make this purchase.

Thanks. :)
