Just Chipped Car, Boosting Only 12 Of 17 Psi

The wastegate was the culprit. I tightened it down 2 full turns which has me around 15psi right now, hopefully tomorrow I'll get a chance to get back in there and do another 1.5 - 2 turns to let the boost reach its intended level. I took a bunch of pictures while I was doing it so I could make a guide for those who have never done it before. It was a hell of a lot easier to do once I took of the charge air line leaving the compressor section. I had to have my younger brother help cause I didn't have enough hands to hold the tools and light at the same time.

don't get too excited with it.. you don't want to get the CEL...

it makes for much easier access to anything around the turbo - i.e. hoses, clamps, adjusting the wastegate in the future, etc. I've been running without my heatshield for over year with no ill effects

Well, that's a given. I thought that since it was suggested to leave it off, that maybe it received more airflow over it for cooling or something....

ok so today I went on a test run with my friend in the passenger seat watching the boost guage. I lock it in 1st with winter mode and gently accelerate up a hill, boosting to about 6-7. Shift into 2nd and go to about 1/2 throttle then hammer it, the car blasts off accellerating real real hard then goes BAM and almost stalls. I immediately turn it off and coast to a stop. We get out and of course it's dark and we cant figure out whats wrong so i start it up and limp coughing and sputtering a mile back to my house. We get it into my garage and figure out that I blew the charge air line clean off the throttle body. We put it back on and clamp the stuff out of it. Turn it back on, idles real rough but it smooths out and I let it run for about 5 minutes before we go out again. Drove it around gentle until i got the balls to try again, so we go at it. Slow roll on in 2nd, holding 16psi then hits 17 and BAM. Again!!

Long story short same thing happened so we used a little sealant on the exterior of the throttle body to hold the clamp on. Where can i get some rolled edge clamps (i think thats what they're called??)

Oh well my roomate and I just mixed up 5 gallons of jungle juice... time to party

I'm glad I read this whole thread. Lots of info. I'd definitely love to get those pics and detailed explanation for the wastegate incase I have the same problem when I my ECU flashed. Though I'm only trying to hit around 15 PSI till I get Samco hoses. I don't want to have the same problem you just had blowing the hoses of the throttle body but this is a good thread.

I dont understand how you guys could be telling this kid to go out and turn the arm. This was the last thing that anybody told me to do. Change all 3 vacuum lines and get the samcos. You will be a fool to just go in there and turn that arm. USMC850 you cannot tell if the hoses are leaking cause you cannot see them when they are under boost conditions. Also I thought that you said all the hoses were good, how could they be if yu are blowing them off the ICP? Dont go the easy way first like greg said. Do the search on all of this stuff and go about it the right way, not the backass way. ;)

Why would my hoses hold 9 psi, then 12 psi if they were good? If they were bad they would hold up to a certain point, then open up and hemmorage pressure.

Oh and my vacumn lines are fine, as stated before they hold the magic number just fine, no leaks.

So why are you only making 12 psi on a 17 psi chip? Do you really think that volvo messed up the waste gate arm that much. I dont, and also you should if any turn that arm 2 maybe 3 turns. How many turns did you turn it? I bet 5-6 turns right.

time for Samcos! and new hose clamps

:o:o:o:o:o:o Looks like Greg said you need the hoses as well

Mine held the magic # as well. That magic # was for vacuum right? But your magic # for boost is 17. So no you do have the magic #. Look I went threw this hole thing about 2 months ago. Do what you like. But when your 17 psi tunrs into 15 then 14 then 13 then 12. Maybe you can read back on this thread. I was only trying to help. ;)
