1st Gen Awd Rear Diff And Center Diff Fluid

I am looking to change the rear diff and center diff fluid on my XC (98/99). The manual does not tell you what kind of fluid you need and how much you need as they call this a non-replacable item, but I want to change it anyway as I plan to ice race the car and want to prevent any problems in the future. Can someone tell me what kind of fluid they are and how much I need. I believe you call the center differential the bevel gear, I have never heard of people changing the rear differential fluid at all.

Also, does the XC come equip with a LSD? I doubt it, but just wondering. I think the AWD-R has it

If you'd like a detailed description of how someone replaced the fluid in the bevel (also known as angle) gear go to:

http://home.ripway.com/2005-4/294125/V70XCBevelGear.pdf

You will note that access to something like a mityvac is really necessary to do this.

Per the volvo parts program the capacity of the angle gear is .75 liter. They describe the fluid by part number 1161648. I've heard, but have NOT confirmed, that that is the same as Mobil 3309.

The capacity of the rear differential, again per the volvo parts program, is 1 liter. The fluid is given part number 1161620. I don't know whether this is simply a different size container of the same fluid used in the bevel/angle gear or if it something different.

I dont know whether it has a LSD,

Bill

no rear LSD for that one

How do you get the Rear Diff Fluid out? My 2002 V70XC AWD filler hole has no room on the inside to pass a small tube in order to pump out the fluid. The bevel gear box has enough room at the back of the filler hole, but the Rear Diff does not. I noticed that on My GirlFriends 2003 V70XC AWD thay have changed the design of the filler hole on the rear Diff. and now it is a small plate with 2 Allen screws holding it on instead of a plug. So... I suspect Volvo has recognized the problem. Anyone have any tricks up their sleve besides drilling into the case and installing a drain? I don't like the chance of metal shavings getting lose in there!
