Turbo Upgrade -> More Intercooler Needed?

SkyWriter

Recommended Posts

had my turbos upgraded by cherry for more flow(25-30%), expect there may be additional compression associated with the change. would like to add additional series intercooler to existing setup to offset rise in temps.

any sources for off the shelf intercoolers?

should i do something different first?

any facts/analysis appreciated!

TIA!

1. IC's are $$$..

2. this on the S80?

3. verify powerr #'s from cherry turbo, like with a Dyno graph?

thanks for the thoughts:

1. i got money

2. yup (by the way the space for the transmission oil cooler will be taken by a transmission oil cooler)

3. meaning to; once it's complete (still in the shop up on the lift). going down to get the numbers soon.

We added an EST intercooler to our 850t after Herman worked his magic on our turbo. Herman converted our 15g into a 19t. We noticed a very nice increase in power after the EST intercooler, but having the ECU redone after the turbo was huge! Did I say huge well that's an understatement. We now have two ECU's one for winter driving (SAM ECU) and a brute we picked up from Terry at VMS for summer time fun! I would suggest you talk to Terry about getting that IPD ECU reworked!

Cheers Trent

the underlord: thanks for the info, i didn't think there was, but i thought there might be some small air-to-ir i could plumb in i could get off the shelf. no idea what size it REALLY needs to be.

Trent: Terry did my work on the exhaust manifolds (great job). but i'm confused, woudl he be able to retune the IPD ECU i have, or did i miss something? i assumed once i got the car off the lifts i would dyno, and send the ECU off to IPD for upgrade.

edit: by the way that EST intercooler is one big jerk (ha! that's where 'jerk' comes from) IC! :) looking for something small i can plumb in series.

I believe Terry would have to install another chip in your ECU. Sorry I don't mean to skirt issues, Terry can correct me if I am wrong but I believe it is a Abolsute? Sorry Guys I am probably out in left field on this one.

I would have thought that he would have told you which company's software was in the ECU, but hey, if it works, it works..

just tryin to get the info out there for other people with 'custom tuning' needs.

Skywriter,

How about an intercooler spray, it would stink when you run out but I have seen some big tanks out there. I am heading to xxtuning.com tomorrow to get my R dynoed. I checked out thier page and they have some pretty cool stuff for intercoolers. Just a thought. Now I really need to look out for a blue S80 on 495!

I hate when I forget to login

A more efficient intercooler will have a more significant impact than upgrading your turbo. I would say after you have a nice FMIC or replacement for the stock on, then get an 18T.

A S80 is a byturbo , and he already has done a turbo upgrade.

hrm... now that's an idea i'm saving for the nitrous setups. i'm not real happy with the intake angle for fuel pooling in the throttle body. but maybe now's the time. Griffin makes a small 24-18x6-8 inches i bet i could stick in there somewhere come april :)

USMC850T: you're right! thanks for the thought.

edit: can't spell, durn it
