Why Did It Take 20 Turns Of The Key To Start The S70?

As long as I've had this ride (not very long) every once in a while I'd have to turn the key a couple times for her to start and thought nothing of it. Then yesterday the car wouldn't start at all. I tried turning the key a few times and everything would light up as it should but nary a peep from the engine bay. The springiness at the end of the key-turn was absent, too. Tried jump-starting with the same result. Was ready to have her towed when I gave it a final try and she roars to life as if nothing had ever been wrong. The next time I started the car it took a few turns, but not nearly as bad.

Any idea what, if anything, might be wrong?

I've had the key just spin and spin before, but thats not what I'm describing. The key would turn to the start position, the instrument panel would light up, and the normal springiness at the end of the turn would be there, but on any subsequent tries it would turn to the start position and the springiness would be gone (instrument panel still lights up).

I thought about the anti- theft systems, too, and one of the things I tried was unlocking and locking with the key fob, didnt make a difference.

Lately it's been starting with just one or the occasional second turn, so I'm stumped.

Maybe I shouldn't have pushed the car so hard during/on the way back from the South Florida Meet ^_^

AFAIK the "alarm" has nothing to do with the key in 850's.

Not true, my key turns my alarm on and off, but one thing you may check if it isn't the key itself is the battery cables. Most of our interior is run on a sperate battery wire than the engine and tranny themselves. I had complete power inside car, but nothing on engine and tranny once, and it was just the other battery cables lose. They should be the two large ones on bottom, as opposed to the strand of cables that runs everything else.

great. that doesnt sound 'spensive at all <_<

Havent ever took the time to find the starter on our cars, but my last transverse engine car only had two bolts and some grease holding the starter in. Shouldn't be hard at all. Erie Volvo has lifetime warranty starters if i'm not mistaken. I could even help you out if you need it.

EDIT: 59 dollars for a starter from erie volvo
