gatecrasher
you do realize you will make more power by running a wider gap....to a point. ideally you run the widest gap you can get away with before encountering blowout/misfire.i

That's why water injection and high efficiency intercoolers help so much with the low octane fuels.
Che'_Moderator
I still have no idea what gap has to do with temperature. :josh:

Would the effort of removing, re-gapping, and replacing the spark plugs God knows how many times make that much of a difference? Granted, we'll assume you already don't have misfire/detonation issues...
gatecrasher
is volvo tuning really THAT far behind the curve or what? im honestly asking. ive never tuned/owned a car where excessive sparkplug gap caused anything more than blowout at high boost/rpm. is noone able to build a real timing curve in their software or what?the combustion chamber design cant be THAT prone to detonationI still have no idea what gap has to do with temperature. wider gap= hotter flame=faster moving flame front across the chamber

Moving the side electrode futher into the cyl will raise temps lets leave it at that. I think a bigger issue that I have seen lately is center electrode material and design. Iridium comes to mind. It does not scrub off heat as well as the coppers do. Not sure if this has to do with mass, or maybe shape but they tend to ping. Some of the higher mass +4s do the same. USMC850T
Ok I finally got a chance to put the new plugs in, and I'd say they worked. NGK's, 1 heat range cooler than stock. I was hitting 17 again without trouble tonight. Nice to actually be able to put your foot down when you want to!

You will be pleasantly surprised. My car went from 225hp to 243hp by changing only fuel!
USMC850T
.023 or .024 - I don't remember which. Some of the gaps on the offending OEM plugs looked wider than .028 though. Made a nice run down the highway at 125 for a mile or so tonight. I got off about 3 minutes later and popped the hood to see my manifold bright red . My fuel is good, I get it at BJ's and it's always run great (93). Sunoco is stuff around here. My friend has an evo that also runs fine on it. JUHITA
HELLO!I´m new here and I have same problem(mystery cutout above near 4000 rpm) with my ´02 XC70 2.5T even I use 98 Oct premium fuel(iI living in Spain). I chanced almost all related to boostcontrol and MAF sensor. My car run with new BSR PPC repro, when I set original software all work perfect but when I flash new BSR sofware in,result when I floor 4th or 5th ECU drop boost to 7 psi(0,45bar) reaching 3700 rpm, this happens on road and also my workshop 4x4 rollingroad.I has take contact to Sweden with software creador and they recomended to chance BCS(very common failure on v70 II serie) and MAF, whitch I do and still ECU throw P1237 DTC(overboost) and continue odd behaviour. My opinion is that stock BCS are too lazy to keep boost pike´s out and that why ECU cut the boost, I ordered EBC(Greddy profec) to try if this will help keep boost stable.... It's the octane rating. Try and find some 100 octane unleaded. It will be worth the effort. B.T.W. EVO is a different animal than ours. They have a way more efficient intercooler.
