jdrotolo
My wife and I used to own a 740 turbo and loved the car. Finally sold to a nephew at 250K. The car just seemed to want to run forever. Then we took a break from the Volvo scene. Now the wife wanted to jump back into safety for our kids sake so we just purchased a 99 S80 T6 with 88K. The car is spotless - one owner, old couple - really does look like new. Only two problems noted so far 1). The illuminating light for the driver's temp control know is out - how hard is this to fix? 2) The car makes a "thunking" sound in the left front (and right front slightly) when going over a bump. I'm guessing this is a strut issue of some sort. After reading many posts and reviews, I'm a little worried that I won't get the same kind of satisfaction that we once got from driving a Volvo. Should I just "run away" before things get too bad!? Thanks.

S70_tony5
agreed1st model years are always the sort of tester model and usually carry alot of littles problems that are corrected the next year line, so dont be surprised if you find some, but volvos are good cars and if the repair isnt too costly just stand by it and it will stand by you. :)
connorb850
It wasn't only the first year that was a problem for the S80, it was also the 2000 and 2001. For those years, it was the worst Volvo built IMO. They have TONS of electrical issues and the T6 transmission (made by GM) is weak. It seems like by 2002 most of the issues with the S80 were resolved. Sorry to scare you jdrotolo but I would run away before you have other more serious issues with it :(

I will heed your advice. My search begins for a 02. I am sure I will need to keep this car at least through the summer since my wife is already so attached. I would have thought buying a one owner vehicle with nearly 90K would have meant most of the issues had been dealt with by now. I'm still waiting for the records to be sent so I can scan through them.

BillAileo
Aren't the S80, V70 and the S60 built on the same P2 platform?Bill
MrWinkey
I'm not gonna argue with the 99 theory ..but as for your clunking it could be something as simple as a sway bar endlink. Could also be the upper spring perch as suggested also. As for the newer model Volvos ...personally they are all the same IMO ....they are not anything close to your 7 series that you had. However all car makers go through a transition period ...but the Swedish cars seem like they have an over extended transition period(you can thank corporate big $$ american company's for that). I'm not bashing but I'm not impressed? The saftey factor is there and always will be but it's the stupid things that fail and cost the consumer big $$$$ not a good way to keep repeate buyers IMO? ;)
