Turbo Uprgrade Options

I really did search, its just so hard to find a place with all the good info im looking for in one place. And yes i read the sticky.

Ok. So im wondering about how i could possibly upgrade my turbo. Upgrading to a 16t sounds pointless since its barely a step up from the 15g. An 18t or 19t was also something i was looking at and was my main consideration, but i was also wondering about other options. Are there parts of the 15g you can replace to increases performance but still keep it a direct bolt on?

Also how can you tell what the designation of one of the mitsubishi turbos? Whats the difference between a TD04 turbo and a TE04H turbo? what is the difference between a TD05 and a TD04 turbo? How about a TD04 and a TD04HL? Am I just getting into specifics or what? Im wondering about this because i was looking around ebay looking for a turbo that i might be able to replace my 15g with and i cant figure out how each turbo compares to the 15g. All this stuff i havent quite got a grasp on and i was just wanting to compare turbos.

I know i probably just asked to rehash basicaly the entire turbo section of the stickied thread but I couldnt get the answers from it. Thanks for the help.

from the "Before you ask a ?" pinned thread: http://web.telia.com/~u58304000/turbo3/mit.../mitsubishi.htm

Since you have a T-5R ('95) you have a conical flange 15G turbo...any other turbo will require a new downpipe. And since your car is Motronic 4.3, stick away from the angled flange turbos with larger exhaust housings. A straight flange 16T or straight flange 18T are two good turbos to look at. The 16T if you want just a little better flow...the 18T is a good choice if you are looking to get some bigger power gains

Darn. I swear i read that whole thing...yet i manage to miss the most important link in the whole thing. Thanks for pointing out my stupidity/laziness/ignorance once again gregg.

So then, what turbochargers will fit with minimal modification other than the mitsus with the TD04 housing? (ps: i think modification to the downpipe is minimal)

P.S.: already lookin at 16T, 18T, and 19T but was wanting MORE options

yeah, the TDO4 13g, 15g, 16t, 18t, 19t are all direct bolt on replacements. In fact, you may not have to replace your dp if you have any of the above except for the conical 15g. If you have the conical, which I think you may since you have a 94, then replace the entire turbo and the dp if possible. You can get a straight 15g, 16t, angled 18t and 19t in the US. You can get a straight 18t from the US, though somewhat tough at times, mostly available in europe.

Oh, and if you want a 19t (biggest bolt on replacement for your car), then PM me, I have one for sale in the FS section for a great price!

Edit: if by chance you do have a straight outlet 15g, then you can bolt on a 16t, or try and find a straight 18t and bolt that on.

I installed an angled flange 16T from an S60 on my car, in addition to the new downpipe it required and let me tell you first hand that it kicks butt. Sure it has alittle extra flow on the intake side but the true 3" exhaust outlet really lets the motor breath my car has very strong pull for just a 16T

First, there is the flange itself -- Basic Mitsubishi, Basic Garrett, and Split-tang Garrett. To confuse things, some Mitsubishi housings use a Basic Garrett flange. The Basic Mitsubishi flange may be what some people call conical -- I don't know. I just know that a Mitsubishi flange is different than a Garrett flange.

Second, there is the placement of flange. Volvo has used three generations of turbo-to-downpipe flanges -- Early 850's used conical, Late 850's/Early S70's used straight, Late S70's used angled.

TD04, TD05, TD06 in combination with -cm2 refer to turbo housing size.

TD04, TD04HL, TD05H, TD06 refer to turbine wheel size and trim.

-12A, -14B, -15G, -16T, -17C, -18G, -19C, -20G refer to compressor wheel size and trim.

Then, there are hybrids -- Mitsubishi housing (and turbine wheel) overbored to fit larger Mitsubishi compressor wheel; Mitsubishi housing (and turbine wheel) overbored to fit larger Garrett compressor wheel.
