Headunit/gps/screen Mounting Plan

I was thinking again - uh oh!

I am planning on installing a permanent navigation system in the T-5R rather than using the iPaq. Rather than one of those systems with the flip up screens for maps or the little directional arrow on the display I am going to be going the following route:

  • One Double-DIN LCD Monitor (Haven't chosen yet.)
  • One Single-DIN Stereo Headunit (Haven't chosen yet.)

NOTE: May get a DVD Headunit to make more use of the LCD Monitor.

  • One CD ROM Navigation System (Haven't chosen yet.)
Now my question is how I am going to install it. I was thinking this:
  • LCD Monitor in factory headunit location.
  • Remove and reroute A/C vents above A/C Controls (location undetermined at this time) and place the Stereo Headunit where they A/C Vents on the center console used to be.
  • Install Nav-Sys either in trunk or glovebox since it won't fit under the seat and I want it hidden and hard to remove.
All thoughts welcome.

Why monkey with your dash to do the CD changer? You can either do an in-car computer (build it small, and you might even fit it in the glovebox!), and have that control the audio, or you can take out the cigarette tray and throw the CD unit down there. It's a little more awk., but preserves the lines of the car. Just my .02 (from thinking about doing same thing myself).

It really shouldn't be too hard to install a pc in the glove box. You could get a mini atx motherboard and that would fit nicely. For your keyboard and mouse you could use bluetooth connections so you could walk around with them... As for video you could run a capture card or somethining of that nature. I've even contemplated using a LCD monitor --- this would let you get much larger sizes than those made by any of the car audio/video companies. As well as audio/video you could throw in a dvd player to mix things up and add another layer to the whole greatness. For audio you could run one of the new cards by creative... an audigy of some sort... I'd go for the complete system in the glove box. It seems reasonable however it may be expensive but seeing what you are thinking of fully doing it would fit in nicely. *Throws $0.02 into the jar*

The Avic N1 system I installed in the jetta was pretty impressive, of course, not the best of all worlds, but the navi system was pretty good...

in terms of in flip out dash monitor and navi unit combo, this maybe the cheapest option...and if you have the money, i would reocmmend that...

hooking it up is not as simple as say a normal HU, but with our spacious double DIN opening, you can put the brain unit right below it...

If you wanted more space.. you could get kicks from Bing, and then put some of the components in the original speaker locations... I think it might be pretty pimp to put a DVD player with one of those slots (instead of a tray) in a door...

I have experience with in car PCs and I don't want a PC in my car. I just want a high quality head unit and LCD in the dash. I DO NOT (not to sound angry or anything) want a flip out under any circumstances - I want it to look as stock as possible. <_<

I have more than enough money, so money isn't an issue. I'd rather have the CD Changer where it is now (in the trunk) and use a dedicated DVD-ROM Nav Computer System and a seperate headunit with DVD capability. I've decided on the system components already I am just working on placement.

why ask for advice if you already know what you are going to do?

Well I am going to start looking for advice soon on which screen might be best, which GPS unit (stand alone) would be best and which headunit would be best. I just haven't gotten to that point yet. I just wanted any thoughts anyone had on the matter at all.

From what jross said I'm also thinking maybe the headunit could go where the ashtray is if I built a housing of some sorts for it, but I'm not quite sure how I'd go about that - ideas in that area are good as well.

I'm also looking for ideas on where to reroute the vents to if I don't just block them off (rear seat A/C is perhaps a possibility?). All other advice is welcome, but don't be offended if I don't take it all - it's just nice to hear other peoples thoughts because it can prevent making mistakes and also provide another view. The only objection I have to flip screens is I don't like the way they look and the way they cover other controls in non-perfect situations.
