tomtbone
3-5k is probably right for a really great job, though it depends on what paint you use. There is Dupont and PPG that both have their high end stuff. Then they both carry a lower end paint. Nason (Dupont) and Omni (PPG). Both of these are about equal and would do a really good job unless you are going to take your car to car shows and be in contests. Especially with a black paint, you can do a really good job with the Nason. I am using Nason basecoat for painting my new sideskirt and redoing the front bumper. The primer and clear coat I will be using is from Southern Polyurethanes. I have a really nice Sharpe gun and a paint booth at work that I can use!!If you want to seriously learn about this stuff go to this forum:Auto Body

Gaff
Wait we went from 3-4 to 3-5 to 6-10 jesus I am not looking for gold flakes in my paint I just need it to shine.Tomtbone, do you know of anyone in the area that's good?I say budget at LEAST $4K for a good paint job, but I think Charles is right that it could be higher. Check out the pics of his project car to appreciate the amount of work. Gold flakes or not does not make a big difference and the brand of paint you use may swing the price only a few hundred $$. When you paint the whole car there's a ton of prep work involved. A good painter will remove all brightwork, trim, etc. and meticulously mask everything that won't easily come off. The whole car should be wet-sanded, and scratches and dings should be filled. All this stuff will telegraph through your new paint. Most modern paint is a two-stage system, where they apply a flat color coat followed by a clear coat that gives it the shine and depth. A good painter will bake the whole car in an oven to cure the paint. Look for at least that level of knowledge and equipment when you check out shops. Using the same color helps beacuse they don't have to paint the inside of everything and the finish will look original. Less work that way, too.I used Auto Engineering Body Works in Belmont a couple of times and was real happy with their work. They're a body shop, not a paint shop, but they have a full paint setup and I saw quite a few $60K+ Porsches, Mercedes, etc. in there.Of course, Maaco will offer you a menu of 3 paint jobs starting at just over $1000. Run like hell unless you just want a Krylon shower. I don't even think they wash the car. I went to Maaco for just a quote once and I was appalled. They had a guy painting a car outside under a canopy.ps. If only the roof, hood, and side need repair, just paint those parts. You can have it blended in nicely and spend a lot less $$ for a quality job.
droot
I didn't even think of just doing a few area's that may work because for the most part the car is in good shapeI just called over and it sounds like this would make more sence then redoing the whole car. thanksdroot

It’s hilarious, they just tape off everything; the clear coat will just start chipping away. A real paint shop I believe will remove parts; fenders/doors/hood/antenna/nozzles... However, if you friends door jambs wern't painted it because he dind't pay for it most places charge aropund $50-$75 to paint the door jambs, in addition to the rest of the car. If you want to save the most money, strip all the old paint off the car and then when you get to the paint shop, tape all your windows off yourself. Then all they have to do is roll your car into the paint booth. It's a really difficult way to save money, but it could save you $2000-$3000 dollars.lee
Ginzue
I have a similar question. Okay, if I were to do all the prepwork myself, including masking, how much so I look at for just a spary? How much would black paint and clearcoat cost?
