Chris_R
I believe that folded horn designs are more for large rooms. They are usually more efficient when corner-loaded in the room (placed in the corners so that the box may couple with the walls, making the box seem even bigger). I don't think you'd like a folded horn in your car. some manufacturers have used transmission line boxes (RX-7 comes to mind) but they are a true oh yeah! to make/tune.Best bet, for good sound and ease of building, is the standard sealed box. After that a well-designed ported box is a great thing. If you're feeling adventurous build a bandpass box. They are generally big, but can sound amazing. All of these box designs rely heavily on the sub that you choose. Some subs cannot perform in certain box types. It really is a very mathematically-intense subject. paulr
Yes I did read they need a large amount of resonating space, but I didn't see any hard ##s. Unless I can find a very clear-cut "how to" / set of calculations, I probably will just do one or two 12s (either image dynamics or JL) in sealed boxes. I just saw that quote, and figgured this could make a rather impressive & novel setup if someone had a clear-cut idea on how to do it. It probably won't save any space with how large the enclosure is, but it looks like it'd be loud and low, and i'd love to be showing off my system, and after the wow's, etc, be like "yeah, that was one 6-inch. your two 12s are stuff". It'd also be nice to get that level of SPL without dumping 1000+ watts into the sub. Every bandpass I've heard had too narrow a response range for my liking (especially on the low end), but I seriously doubt they were tuned at all, let alone correctly. My last box was a ported and it was LOUD, but it didn't go low that well (I had someone else build it) and it farted at certain freq's, which were ironically common in some of my favorite songs... Anyway it'l be several months before I have the cash for subs, so I just figgured I'd explore every option before I drop the $$. Thanks!
