Change 96 854r For 97 V70r?

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Moderators if this is in the wrong place please shift.

I currently own a 96 854 R, Japanese import into New Zealand. And a New Zealand New 97 V70 R AWD has just become available at possibly a decent price, 2 owners and FSH Which I have yet to see.

Which one for those that have had both, is better for longevity and performance upgrades.

Both are autos and will stay autos.

Both are black

My 850 is on 107kms the v70 is 128kms

Daily driver

Just installed the Wietecs in the 850 and very happy with them so I will loose those :( .

Have spent $ already in the 850 in order to get it to a condition which I am happy with still a fair bit of paint work to do and the volans are a bit square $2KNZ to spend here.

Always wanted a wagon

Unsure about the AWD $$ in the future.

I don't ever drive in snow

Before this came up I was looking at possibly getting BSR or RICA chip for the 850 and opening up the exhaust as well.

I know the AWD is a pain to get sus. upgrades for so will I get frustrated with this after having the weitecs?

I will never give either car more than 300 odd HP. I have a point and squirt car already.

I like very much the dash in the 850 even if it does rattle a bit. I also love the alcantera centers in the seats. I will certainly miss these.

No I can't really afford to keep both.

Help a man out here. I would like to hear from those that have had both and your own impressions.

A manual t5 is just not going to happen sadly so don't even mention it.

Do you feel that spending say 4KUS to change is worth it?

Yeah,

I bought mine for 15k NZD and I could probably sell it for 13K, Ive had it one year, So it is def a good price and they say its in execellent condition <sigh>

NZ new performance Volvos are few and far between, you are probably talking maybe 5-10 sold each year. Most used ones are imports from either Japan (like mine) or Singapore. Most T5s that are here are only the 2.0 not the 2.3's So it s no easy road.

I could always just keep hanging out to try and find the perfect 850R wagon, but it def wont be a NZ car.

Well,

I actually went and looked at the beast. It was in very good condition, always serviced at the main volvo dealer, just had the big service last year $3500NZ.

Overall it was in better condition than my 850.

However here are my impressions incase this will help anyone else out in the future.

The transmission was way smoother than any 850 I have driven

Less noise gets into the cabin

Ride seamed a little more refined but even more "crashy" Exact same tyre size as what i have.

Better fit and finish - less rattles etc

Overall the car is less RAW and quite frankly a little boring. The whole interior experence has just lost some soul compared to the 850's. To me the dash etc is very typical japanese etc, and does not stand out and say VOLVO.

Will I be buying the car? Not at the asking price (which is actually pretty good anyways)

Would I buy it if I had found it at the time I was looking and purchased my 850? yes.

So if any one in NZ is looking at getting into one of these, I would srongly recommend you look at this one.

Thats 16954 in AU dollars which is the going rate over here.

Whats with the AWD system? I just thought it was the same deal as with WRX and EVOs ect

Yeah but how available are they, I'm sure more than 15 ever got sold in OZ.

It's viscous coupling I believe which only drives the front wheels until the fronts start slipping. For some it might be fine, but I have driven subys etc and nothing quite replaces permanent AWD. For what I use it for there is no need to go through the expense of trading up for this car and any hastles if the AWD system packs it in.

Not mention The lack of suspension upgrades for the AWD - thats the real turn off.

Call me retro but I just preffer the blocky look of the 850s with the grey bumber tops and all.

Ultimate for me will be an 850 wagon with widebody fenders and rear or permanent AWD. Then you could really let the motor sing. Maybe a pet project for me if a few other things don't happen.
