mbsl98
There is a lot of comment to the effect that the cabin air filter is a "big" help in reducing evaporator failure. Is this really borne out by a reduced failure rate in the 70's as they reach the same age as when the 850's fail? It seems to me that there are a lot of 70 owners on here that report failures. connorb850
As far as I know, all 70 series came factory fitted with the filter. Yeah, a leaking evaporator does happen in the 70 series, but not anywhere near as much as in the 850s. I think the main reason the evap. fails is due to moisture. IMO if you turn the A/C compressor off and run the blower fan for a few minutes before you reach your destination, this is the best way to prolong the evap. Most of the newer Volvos even have a feature that runs the fan for a few minutes when the car is off to dry out the evap.
MadeInJapan
Without the filter, gunk gets in there...this allows moisture to accumulate at the bottom of the fan housing...a sure and quicker way to rust out the evap. Therefore, it's a good idea to spend the $35 at www.fcpgroton.com and buy the retro kit for the filter for 850's without them.
