I Got My S70 Cluster Working In A 95 Flawlessly

Well for now I have accurate speed on my 95 850 using a 98 S70 cluster. Partially ghetto solution for now, although I am researching how to do this with some sort of microcontroller or similar.

In my case also I tapped an ABS sensor as since the manual swap, I have an M56H with no speed sensor. however the ABS and trans speed sensor put out the same voltage.

And the S70 cluster needs 48 pulses per revolution (digital speed sense, basically 48 +12V pulses for every wheel spin)

after re-looking at the pinouts of both clusters I realized that the factory 850 cluster already does the analog to digital conversion, so what I have done now is hooked up the factory cluster to power and ground, and ran the abs signals into it and ran the 48pulse per revolution to the S70 cluster, and my 850 cluster is hiding out in the trunk doing the translation.

Pics, Schematics and diagrams to follow...

Also to follow is a better, smaller, dedicated solution where you don't have to use the original cluster...

Just letting everyone know that it can be done :D

Nice! I can finally put my V70R cluster to good use!

BTW you should be able to just pull the board off the 850 cluster since that's all you need - don't need any of the actual gauges or housing or anything. Then you can just shove it in the dash behind the new cluster.

Here's some of the schematics

Pinout of the clusters

Pinout description for the S70 cluster

Pinout description for the 850 cluster

basically what I did was jumper pins 2 and 3 to the + and - of the ABS sensor.

Pin 6 to speed input pin on the S70 cluster.

Switched power to pins 16 and 18

ground to pins 15 and 17

Assume that the S70 cluster is in the dash and the original 850 cluster is elsewhere

850 cluster (tucked away somewhere)

All of these pins are in the largest 30pin connector and Pin 1 starts top right and reads left.

Pin 2 (Speedsense - ) from ABS sensor or cut wire leading to S70 cluster and re-route to 850 cluster

Pin 3 (Speedsense + ) from ABS sensor or cut wire leading to S70 cluster and re-route to 850 cluster

Pin 6 (48pulse output) connect to pin 3 of S70 cluster (the cluster side of speedsense + that you just cut)

Pin 15 (ground)

Pin 16 (switched +12VDC)

Pin 17 (ground)

Pin 18 (switched +12VDC)

I'll try and make a diagram, I just need to dig out Visio to make it look decent.

Hi Anthony,

I also have a '95 850 (only a N/A GLT) Stick. Since it came with stick I have the speed senser in the Trans. From what I have deduced on your S70 Cluster update is that in my situation it would be a plug and play solution! Please let me know if I have overlooked something I do want to upgrade soon if possible.

Thanks for the info and keep on sharing!!!!

Regards,

Paul :D

P.S. Does it matter what year of S70 Cluster you use? I have a line on a 1999-2000 one right now.
