Engine Malfunction

Alright so something happened to the Volvo on friday night. I was driving up to the race track with a friend to watch the races average speed was 45-60 all back country roads, and turning off the highway onto the track my friend behind me calls and tells me I was leaking something from under the car. I check and the car is steaming from the left side of the hood primarily(left side if your sitting in the car). I check all the gauges the car has not overheated from what the guage of the dash is saying. It's right in the middle. My engine coolant is empty (i had filled it up a day or so ago). I put water in the car and pray it was just a mishap. 2hrs later i take a go back to the car and the engine is still hot as hell. I decide to call the rents up and my dad says to drive it home after i tell him everything. Consider its a 30 mile drive or so home. ON the way home i get 3 gallons of water to put iin the sucker continuosly on the way home. ON the drive home the car shakes is shaking a little more than normal and doesnt sound all the same and the engine oil light starts to flicker occasionally. Let me also state that the car had more trouble starting after this . Once i get home i show my dad whats happening we pop the trunk and put some water into the coolant. Once this is done, it starts to steam some around the steering column, around by the turbo. Do you guys know what the hell happend to my baby? Also, the car was checked two days prior by my mechanic at euroimage. I told him to check all the hoses all that stuff that should be checked around 750000. He said it was all fine. Any insite would be great.

It's obvious (since your friend mentioned it as well and you needed to "continuously" fill the radiator) that you're leaking coolant. Check the coolant lines going to the turbo.

I think the in modern cooling systems, you normally fill water into the reservoir. Did you fill the reservoir or did you fill directly into the radiator? If you filled the reservior only, I think the engine needs to cool before the radiator sucks the water in.

Did you let the engine cool after filling the reservoir with water during your 30mi drive home? If you didn't, you may have driven without water for a while.

Or, if you lost a lot of coolant and refilled the radiator directly into the radiator, just hope nothing got damaged while filling a hot engine with cold water.

Well, I'm not exactly sure what your problem is but I think this could be a serious problem that you should check right away. I know that when this happened with me on a different car, a bolt had broken through my timing cover and my water was mixing with me oil. Very bad... I know that it was harder to start after the first time I re-filled the coolant and it didn't drive more than 2 miles before that engine was toast. I would not even recommend starting the engine until you know more.
