2000 V70 Xc Cel/p1171/ecm261a

Several months ago my Check Engine Light came on. I have a 2000 V70 XC. The Volvo dealer just reset it and told me "don't worry - be happy". It came back on, but I ignored it since the car was running OK. Recently I took the car in for its 45,000 mi. check-up. Dealer said I needed new front and rear oxygen sensors, a new wiring harness, and a new adapter (~$800). They implied that this was the reason myCEL was going on. A few miles later the light was back on. It showed a code of ECM1600. Dealer didn't know what this meant. They called someone at Volvo central. They tested the vacuum on the intake side. It was OK but they slapped some silicone on and clamped it back together. They reset the computer. Light came on again after 18 miles. Now the car shows a P1171 code. Meanwhile I have started reading your forum posts. I asked the dealer about the MAF sensor. They say that it is reading perfectly. I asked about the CP valve. They say that it is OK (based on the vacuum check?). Finally, I mentioned to them that the last few times I have turned the car engine on I have noticed that the idle pops up to 2200 rpm for maybe ten seconds before settling back down to about 1200 rpm. I ask them if they have checked the Electronic Throttle Module. The service rep. goes back to his computer and discovers that lo and behold there has been a recall from Volvo on the ETM. Actually it doesn't seem to be a real recall. It seems to be a software upgrade and an extended warranty. I start looking on the web and find out that sure enough in the ETM refund letter it states:

"Your vehicle may experience situations related to the affected Electronic Throttle System function in which the Check Engine Light or ETS light illuminate."

I'm wondering if this may sound familiar to any of you out in Volvoland. Apparently it is 1999-2001's that have this problem. The word on the street is that Volvo should be replacing the ETMs but this would cost them $400,000,000 since it would cost ~$1000 a pop on 400,000 cars.

I'll keep you posted on what happens.

I had issues with the check engine light with 2 codes:

P1171

P0422

The P1171 was resolved with a new MAF. It was put in about 10,000 miles ago and have never gotten a P1171 again.

The P0422 comes on once in a while but, during the course of the day gettign in and out of the car, it goes off by itself. It will turn on in the morning, by mid afternoon it is off, so I have not done anything about it. The car drives fine and iddles fine, but sometimed it has a hard time starting where it cranks more than normal and then starts to iddle.

There is a bulletin out on free ETM software update at any Volvo dealer and is free of charge.

You got a PM

Is it hard to install a new MAF by yourself? Can anyone take some pictures to show how to do it?

I've had that same P1171 code for awhile now, and it just keeps coming back everytime I reset it with my OBDII. I was hoping the ETM software update and cleaning would solve this issue, but all that did was erase my IPD programming. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

So I bit the bullet and went to the stealership to have them replace my MAF since I couldn't get that darn thing off the hose/tube thing (read the post above this one). I could get the torx and hose clamp off, but couldn't separate the MAF housing from the hose. The dealer charged me $65 in labor to do this. I was shocked and complained to the manager and asked why they charged an hour's worth when it should only take the tech like 5 minutes to do. Anyways, I got them to decrease the labor charge to $40. Still a rip, but what can you do?

With the new MAF, my P1171 codes with CEL have not come back and the car boosts back to my 12-14psi IPD levels. Feels like throttle response and boost spool are more immediate as well. Basically, the car is back to its usual speedy self.

I'd still like to hear any suggestions on how to take that MAF off though...
