discount tire nankang photo

So i'm in the market for new tires on my c70 and i'm not real crazy about spending 200 a piece for pilots. (not to mention install charges) Has anyone heard of this Nankang tire, it's apparently some new company hitting the market...obviously much cheaper in price but how much performance am i'm compromising? The tread pattern is REALLY close to my old pilots. I know you'll tell me not to be a cheap a$$ but my mortgage doubled when i bought my new house so money is tighter. Let me know if you all have heard good or bad about these. Thanks guys

I had the NSII's on my last set of wheels on the Q45, I was impressed. Quiet, nice grip, good wet traction (last year during the near record rainfall we had), for the money, well worth it. I'm running General Exclaim UHP on this set of wheels, and I really like these. Owned by Continental, an old American brand, good pricing right now, but Tirerack says they'll be going up soon.

So do Falkens, Hankooks and Nitto get a bad wrap or are they just fast wearing ? I've havev 2 sets of Falkens before and lked um fine, not the most expensive tire out there but good traction, I guess the wet trac could've been a little better but still ........ I thought Hankooks were beast and come on a few big $$ hi-power sports cars stock, forgive the lack of details to back it up !

I have pilot sports on the C, and they def. aren't worth the extra markup. Go with the Nankangs. You won't be too upset. I'll tell you think much when the Pilots are dead, I won't be putting a new set of them on... actaully, I think at that point the Nistos will make an exit.

Just make sure you get the right size, load rating etc. and the NanKangs will be fine.

Ignore the G. :)

I have been running the NS1 tires for years. Sure, they aren't as good as the F1s I had, but the wear is FAR better. If you aren't racing the C70, they are fairly good tires. It isn't a new company, just not well known in the US. There was a set on my car when I bought it, and that was the first I have heard of them.

Wear is good, wet and dry traction are decent.

They must be becoming more popular, because when I had to replace a tire recently, Discount had it in stock.

I guess you can't beet the price but i had a set of 4 on mine really thought they sucked. First the bead di hold round on the rim. then one day i had one drain down and when i pumped up the tire again it f'ed the sidewall up and got it all outta round. so i swapped out the front set. then the rears wore real quick. I ten to think nankings are for light rice cars and not heavy volvos.

I've worked for some wheel and tire guys over the years (industry people, not Discount Tires or something) and from my own personal experience, I was very happy with my NSII's. The owner of AZA forged alloys turned me onto them and 95% of the wheels he makes are for SUV's and large luxury cars, so definitely not the light weight ricers.

IMO, if you're on a tight budget, you can't do much better for the money unless you can get KUMHO 711's for around the same price in which case I'd get those, but honestly, I was satisfied with mine.

I'd avoid the NS1 tire like the plague. Over here (Europe) it has a reputation as a "ditch dumper" as its lets go without any real warning. Cheap but definately not cheerful.

The NS2 tire is much improved and is a great budget tire at about the same cost as the NS1

That said...

Your tires keep you on the road in wet or dry, they have a huge bearing on your stopping distances as well as handling. I personally wouldn't skimp on tires and would shop around or even try and find an eBay bargain (new tires - not used) to get something decent. Most places in the UK charge about $220 per tire for a Continental SportContact2 / Michelin Pilot PS2 / Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3, but I managed to get that price down by shopping around and doing a deal with a tire install place meaning I can get them fitted for about $130 each. Quite a saving!
