Tell Me About Volvo Year Splits And Production Runs...

I just bought a '98 C70 HT Manual with 65k miles. I replaced the timing belt, after finding out that I had the newer mechanical tensioner instead of the hydraulic one. But, I have a throttle cable, so I've got the older throttle body, right?

Does Volvo do a lot of running changes? When do they switch model years on their production run?

This car was built and picked up by the original owner from the factory on June 12, 1998. The last 6 digits of the VIN are 005005. That would lead me to believe that it's a very early production model -- but it's at the END of 1998 production, right? Anyone have any input on this? I'd like to know whether I have the early or late shifter. I'd like the later one, to be able to buy the B&M short shift kit...

Thanks for any info. This is my first Volvo, I've been in VW/Audi cars for many years... so I'm used to running changes and random strangeness with production.

www.eurosporttuning.com sells the short shifter for 98's.

and no that one from B&M won't fit your car.

and no, you don't have an ETS/ETB/ETM/whatever you want to call it.

and i'm moving this to the right forum.

Ummm... thanks for the move (apparently the C70 is the bastard child between the forums... the same as an '02 in most aspects, but one-year, 98, vanquished to the 98 and prior forums? Whatever...), but with a 98, I should have a hydraulic tensioner, too... I don't.

I was asking _what_ the differences were between the 98 and 99 shifter so that I can verify the actual type in my car -- should I assume that the mechanical tensioner is the only late-model variation that I'll find?

The mechanical tensioner begins with engine serial number 1266128. Also, the mechanical tensioner has to be replaced with every belt change

Yeah, I'm seeing now that Volvo goes more by engine number than chassis number. I did do the mechanical tensioner when I did the timing belt. Very easy job after you do it the first time.

and you have the 98 shifter.

That's why I asked the questions in the first place  -- when does Volvo change model years? With a June 1998 build, most factories were well into 1999 production... what specifically do I look for to establish the difference between the two shifters? I don't want to get caught in another cluster like the timing belt thing...

colors

It's cassis (purple) and light gray interior. I'll get some pics up soon. I can't say enough about the car, perfectly maintained, 65k miles, manual transmission and pre-electronic throttle crap... looks like the best car I could have found.

Does anyone have production numbers on C70 manuals? I saw the numbers floating around for the manual wagons and there aren't many of them... I have to thing there are even fewer manual coupes.

EDIT: Pic posted in show room.

i'm going to go out on a limb here and say that if you have a M56h/l, and your car is a 98 MY, you'll be ok with the 98 SS.
