2 Questions

Recommended Posts

Hi fellows,

Couple of questions,

1. I checked the ETM on my 2001 S60 T5 and noticed the label was yellow and it said Magneta Millnegna (something like that). Does this mean the ETM was already replaced?

2. I notice the transmission fluid on my car is dark, kinda brownish. Does this mean it's time for a trans service? How often should the trans fluid be changed?

by the way, I just purchased the car 1 week ago with 60K miles.

Thanks,

1. Not 100% but think the yellow sticker means that it is good and has been replaced

2. Brown is bad. You want it to be pinkish bright redish. Not sure what your car calls for. Most are somewhere between ever 20-30k. Depends on how hard you drive.

what your stating is Magneti Marelli which is an Italian manufacturer of fuel system devices including injectors and throttle bodies. I can remember but the faulty ETM 's are MM and the replacements are Siemens. but do a search to confirm/deny.

Drain and refill the trans with instructions found on here in a search. I did three consecutive drain and fills and it takes just about an hour to do. Went to a local Mobil distributor and picked up a case of 12 quarts of Mobil 3309 which is the Volvo approved trans fluid. After three drain and fills the color is candy apple red and clear (not murky). Only cost $46.50 including tax for the 12 quarts. Dealer wants $10 or more per quart.

It's a simple hex plug on the trans pan, easy to find and just as easy as changing the oil. About 3.5 quart come out each time. The rest is in the Torque converter and remixes when you run around the block between drain and fills.

Mine ETM was replaced 5 months ago. It has a yellow sticker, made by Magneti Marelli and has part number 8644347 on it. The one that failed was also yellow + same PN.

I do read a lot about original ETMs having a white color sticker with PN 8644346 (1 less than the yellow ones). But I can't confirm definitively through my own experience (bought the car used at 46k with the yellow stick ETM)

I have read the ETM extended warranty requires checking VINs to determine if the car is under this extended warranty. In the past, I have seen Volvo has changeed parts in the middle of the product year. Perhaps they did so with the white sticker to yellow sticker ETM in the 01 year. Just a guess on my part. I've not read anything definite here.

Sorry but there doesn't seem to be anything definitive on various forums.

On ATF, the link in my signature line has pointers to flush yourself and save a bundle from the dealer. Also contains link to perform proper ATF fluid level check.

Hope this helps.

I just had the ETM replaced on our '01 V70 at 76,400. Original ETM was a white label, the new ones are yellow label. The replacement ETM's are the same Magnetti Marelli's that were originally installed new and will fail, due to a poor design, just like the originals. When the dealer installs your ETM he'll include a software upgrade as part of the package. Some say it'll improve performance, others that its just a placebo effect.

I flushed and replaced the ATF in our Geartronic trans with Mobil 3309 following Gibbons excellent directions posted elsewhere on Volvospeed. 15,000 miles later we're still happy. I got a case of 3309 from Boncosky Oil in Ohio. Including shipping to So Cal it was under $50. B)

According to the guys at swedespeed,

there's another problem brewing.

Hi Guys,

I just called the dealer and found out it will cost $410.00 to have the transmission fluid in my car replaced. WTF?? :o $410.00???? :o

Can I use the mobil 3309 as a substitute? Please let me know so I can look into using that. I really don't want to and cannot afford $410.00 for this service.

Thanks,

Yes.
