C70 Surround Sound System

First off, I can "only" count 11 speakers on this sucker, when there are supposed to be 14. I ponder if a previous owner did some sort of fraudulent conversion, or if maybe I am just missing something. Of the 11 speakers I can locate, 5 don't make sound. Of the remaining 6, 2 are blown or rattle. The in dash cd player and tape player do not work, and I lose audio intermittantly while listening to my only audio source- radio and I have to punch the unit to get the sound back.

The 2 front dash tweeters and 2 rear decklid tweeters don't work. I pulled them out and the circuit boards are literally fried and look flame kissed. The 2 rear subs are either blown, or rattle like a mofo. If I could get to the dam subs, maybe I'd be able to tell.

That's 4 so far of the 5 speakers I mentioned that don't work. The other one is the driver door sub. It was disconnected when I got the car. So I hooked it up- speaker was fine, and the next day I saw smoke when I used my window switch, so I unhooked it again. Volvo fixed the window switch, but I'm scared to hook it back. I don't know if it caused the problem or not.

I think there should be a pinned topic just for me to list my various car malfunctions and problems. Lordy help me. <_<

thats funny... my driver's side sub speaker was disconnected too...

the C70 definitely had some Quality Control issues on their building...

but you seem to have a BIGGER problem...

Good Luck

by the way.. i think the rear deck has two three way speakers... (6)

The Driver's Door has 2, Pass 2, the 2 dash front tweeters, and two for the center channel thing If I recall Correctly...

So did you plug it back in when you saw it was disconnected? Any problems so far? I think a good solution I have never heard anyone mention would be to convert all of the speakers from 4 ohm to 8 ohm. I think Volvo or even Dynaudio at that miscalculated the wattage and resistance. They are fried. The 8 ohms would be twice the resistance and reliability. See, if Japanese people did the system, it would be good still.

I went to the volvo dealership the other day and a customer brought in his c70 to be serviced for electrical problems also. Is this what I have to look forward to when i find 1 of my own?:unsure:

Yes, that is what you should look forward to. Get a Lexus my friend. Unless you like wondering all the time, "How do I fix this?" I am stuck with this car- it is fast though. But after this it's gonna be an SC300 or IS300 with a Supra TT swap.

Just a suggestion, but you both have 98s.... Granted you don't have ME7, so that is a good thing. But ALWAYS the first model year of a car has problems. My 2001 has no speakers blown. I only have 11 speakers, maybe that is the base sound system? I can't see why or how there would be 3 others however. Also, the AMP can EASILY overpower all of the speakers in the car at the same time, so if you aren't careful... you can and will fry the speakers. I actually have 12 speakers cause I added an aftermarket subwoofer to help out those shittiy a$$ 'subs' in the back even though they really aren't subs per-say. My advice, take those 2 out entirely and put in an aftermarket. I just haven't gotten around to taking them out. But my 1600 watt audiobahn set up in back and the stock center channel sub really matches up well with the speakers through the car. Also a FYI they are 5x7 or 6x9 in the doors, not subs. If you want to avoid the common electrical problems go with the (hate to say it) more refined versions of the car, where more of the problems were worked out.

ahhh lex, sorry I went off on a bit of a tangent... as per your problems I would suggest taking it to a audio shop if you aren't aquianted with the intracacies of this system. There are so many speakers doing so many different things that its pretty easy to screw up. Lord knows I would break every single component in the car prior to fixing one. It is easy to say "go aftermarket" however, I personally love the way the stock system sounds... it is well tuned for the volume and layout of the car. However, you could solve all of your problems relatively easily by doing this. Only problem is that the mounting locations are set up for a 11 point system. I don't know where you are going to find a HU to run that, you would have to go with component systems which will end up being $$$. So what I am trying to say after that novel is... good luck.

I plugged it in, and havent had much electrical problems except with the immobilizer of the ignition.

I guess I got a good 98... im running an aftermarket HU, and i may blow the speakers / my eardrums... but thats from me abusing them at super high volumes :P but i dont do that all the time, and they work great minus door rattles...

Good Luck

Yeah Vipervette, my system is the premium one with 14 speakers- a bit different. I opened my door up. The bottom speaker is the one I talk about. It is a totally round speaker I think about 8" and pretty sure it is a sub, because there is a mid range speaker above it in the door and then the tweeter in the dash.

I know first year should have problems but it is based off of the 850. And in 1997 the C70 was out in Europe. And hey My Lexus was a 1997 model- first year of the style- no problems.

Anyway, I noticed that all of the 8ohm speakers in the car was clean and working while the 4ohm speakers are burnt and broken.

I actually didn't realize that the center channel has 2 speakers. My dash is off so I see there is one midrange and one little tweeter to the side. So that makes...12 that I could find. I am thinking that each rear sub has a small speaker next to it like the center channel does? That would make 14. Anyway, should I get OEM speakers again or go aftermarket? There's all these resistors and filters and such on the stock speakers. Dunno if I'd have to solder some onto the aftermarket speakers.

I have the original invoice from when my car was bought new in 98 in Sweden, and it says 9 speaker premium sound system. All I know is that it was classified as a 9 speaker system, even if there might be the odd tweeter here and there. On another note, my centre dash speaker doesn't work. And yes I am in "Dolby" mode.

saying that sense the C70 was based on the 850 in terms of the sound system has nothing to do with it. The entire sound system in the C70 is unlike anything that volvo has done in another one of there cars.

As per the other two speakers in the back, there is a tweeter behind that grille with each 'sub'.
