2000 Volvo S40 Cel

Hello All,

I brought my 2000 s40 into the dealer for a CEL. I had the camshaft position sensor, the actuator, and the cvvt solenoid replaced all at their recommendation and my CEL still comes on after driving for about 35 miles.

The codes pulled remain the same as when I first brought the car in so... I feel like they didn't fix anything.

I brought it in again today and they said they need to replace another component of the CVVT that would cost me around $150 for parts and $450 for labor!

My question is, has anyone else had the same problem? The performance on the car is great so is it really worth fixing? The dealership tells me since they're in there, they should also change out the timing belt as my car is at 80,000 miles.

Any opinions..suggestions?

Thanks!

We had a rash of S40's setting the CEL off for VVT codes

The cams were set wrong from the factory.

The other issue (and your not going to want to hear this) If its a sludge engine the sludge restricts the flow of oil and clogs the VVT .

The engine holds 5.5qt of oil if not changed at 7500 (i think its to long ) problems, problems.

Check the bottom of the oil cap thats the tell tale (If they didnt clean it )

The timing belt I believe is 105000 check the manual

I haven't heard of any problem of S40 for the same issue. Maybe this was due to the earlier batch of S40 came to U.S. I change my oil regularly every 3K.

I would take to independent shop for a lower price on repair bill since you not under the warranty any longer.

timming belt due at 105,000 miles.

Yes agreed....I'm more inclined to think the cam timing is out being that it sets pretty much instantly(have seen this before). No to the timing belt as like stated the interval is 105K.....they should have checked the timing FIRST if that was not done and chances are it wasn't? ;)

I've had the same problem with the p-0014 codes and the P-0015. I had the camshaft reset valve replaced at the dealer and less than a weel later the cel was back on. Latley the engine had been idleing low and I was wondering if this could be corrected by an oil change. How often should the oil be changed in the s40. Also want to figure out the codes. Just recently the dsa light is on and won't shut off, meaning the traction system is not engaged. Anyone have any suggestions about this problem. seems that I have a lot of issues with the car and any suggestions would be great

thanks

If you paid for the service at dealer to fix the camshaft cel just last week, take it back and demand them to fix it right. They should fix it for the service they charged you. If they try to charge you additional $$, tell them you'll discuss that with N.A Volvo corp customer service.

As stated above, oil change should be done between 3-5000K. Myself change it every 3-4K interval.

Low idle, you can clean AIC,TB.

DSA, it could be your MAF is not reading right. Try cleaning it see if it help. If not, then it might be one of your ABS sensor is damage or faulty or your CEM triggering a DSA light.

DSA system

There are several how-to on s40concepts.net

I suggest you browse through that section and do some maintance yourself.

When I bought my 2000 S40 from an auction in 2005. After it got fixed, it was vibrating, I thought its was one the engine mounts ripped. Yes but that wasn't the problem. Just last summer Check Engine light came on. I ran a scanner and it gave me a P0014. I changed the timing belt, hoping the light would go out. Unfortunatly it didn't. I've been told, what happens is that exuast valves close too soon, causing some of the burned gasses to stay behind and get mixed with the new and fresh gas and air. Making your car work unevenly and making the vibration, that I was wondering about. The performance of the car also drops knoticebly. There is an interesting deal on the exuast camshaft. The intake camshaft is a one solid piece, the shaft and the sprocet are one piece. Not the exuast, on the shaft the is some kind of mechanist and then on to, the sprocet is bolted, I would say and there is some kind of fualt in that mechanist. All timing marks are positions correctly.

By the way, change the timing belt your self, save some money, it might take you few hours if you have never didn't before, but its worth it.

I'll see what else I can find. e-mail me if you need help changing the timing belt (sweetride10@yahoo.com)

Yeah the DSA light has been on since I got the car, and the scanner wouldn't pick it up either.

So i could use some help as well.

I'm not quite sure as to how the FPR set that specific code ,The FPR is a very common issue with the 40 series . Hard starting and poor fuel mileage are some of the common symptoms. But I don't see a connection to the VVT code. ;)
