I have an sc801 head unit in my 1996 850r which also the same head unit i had in my old 1995 850 t5.

Im looking to connect the alpine CHA-S634 mp3 to my sc801 head unit. I undersatnd that i need one of the volap adapters to convert volvo's strange cd out to the m-bus din connector.

This one is the one that is stated for 91-95 sc800 series head units.

and this is what they say

Volvo 1991-95 to Alpine CHM-S620 6-disc M-Bus compatible changers.

The VOLALP harness adapter connects to the 8 pin mini-DIN on the back of the OEM radio. When used with the ALPIL is also suitable for interfacing with SC-710 radios built after 3/96 and all "SC800" series radios.

My 850r is a 96 so does that mean that the radio is a 96, if so then do i need this one

and this is what they say

Volvo 1996-2000 (excluding S80) to Alpine CHM-S620 6-disc M-Bus changers.

Plugs into Mini 8 pin DIN on back of radio. Must use Alpine CD cable. Works with all models of Volvo radios in above applications.

can anyone tell me what one i need?

Thanks.

I also have an SC-801, in a '97 model 850. I went for the really cheap route by unsoldering the existing connector on the back of the head unit and wiring in an Alpine compatible connector (standard 8-pin DIN) on flying leads. Anyway, in terms of wiring this is the same as the first option you mention for '91-'95 models and I have had no problems at all.

I also got confused by the statement that all '96-on cars needed the ALPIL or a VOLIL. I believe that some other '96-on SC-800 models monkey around with the data signals on the CD connector, and so need the extra box to convert the protocol back to Alpine compatible.

In my quest for low cost I went as far as monitoring the data signals produced by the head unit and the CD changer (I was planning to use a microcontroller to do any protocol conversion) before concluding that the SC-801 talks pure Alpine.

Thanks FiveAlive, could you tell me what setup you have? (changer model etc)

And do you have a wiring diagram for the pins you soldered the din onto?

thanks.
