Bogging Down

I've noticed lately that as I take my car through a tight turn for a extended period of time, the engine bogs down, or in other words, I hit the gas but the car doesn't go until it straightens out. I think this may be due to the fuel pump not getting fuel to the engine. (note: this also happens on full tank of gas as well as a light tank)

I just think it's the fuel pump, but I want another opinion before I got out and get a Walboro or something...

Thanks!

Sounds like the same problem that's on my plate this week. My engine has been running poorly, sandbagging at any load, and often just crapping out when driving down the street. I went through the fuel system components and checked them over. The fuel pump was putting out 36 psi at idle and would spike to 42 psi at load (then fall back to about 36 psi). I thought this was close enough to the 38/44 which is the correct spec.

Well, fast forward a week. The car currently runs like absolute donkey doo and will barely get out of its own tracks. I wouldn't drive it at all if I had any choice in the matter. I checked the fuel pressure at the rail yesterday and I am currently at 34 psi with no change at load or when the fuel pressure regulator has the vac line disconnected. It actually fluctuates a bit downward with the engine held steady.

Needless to say, I placed a fuel pump order this morning at fuel-pumps.net (new Walbro replacement is like $68 before shipping). I hope it is not as loud as other posters have said. At 1/3 the price of the Bosch I figured I'd give it a shot.

Good luck. (and check your rail pressure if you've got a guage) Sounds like you are in the same boat. If your pressure is good, I'd check the emissions lines that run from the engine compartment to the tank. A broken vacuum line caused some weird things to happen with my car.

Yeah, great idea, I'll have to check all the vac lines, and I just ordered a new fuel filter.

But I'm thinking of just upgrading to the Walbro 255 fuel pump from VMS instead of the OE pump you buy online for $70, we'll see.

I'd read up some on the 255 Walbro. I think it would be tough and expensive to build a Volvo engine into a monster that would really need all the additional fuel. If I am not mistaken the original pump will flow like 140 lph, the Walbro 190 is spec'ed to flow 180-190 lph. The additional cost and noise of the bigger 255 lph pump is probably overkill. I did the homework and came to this conclusion for my own needs. I think the consensus was that the original pump was good up to about 350 HP engine build. Figure the 190 is good enough up to 450 HP, the 255 good for 650 HP. These are wild guestimates on my part by the way.

Some people have reported issues of the engine running rich with the 255 since all the unneeded fuel can not be returned to the tank fast enough and hence overpressuring the fuel rail. Food for thought.

Good luck.
