Hi, I have a 2001 S80 that I am dying to spruce up. Things that I am looking at adding a Video unit in the center speaker dock. Something that pops up. It should be connected to a DVD changer that is fixed into the spare CD Changer slot at the truck.

Problems with this is

a) Unable to find many Video display that pops up vertically

B) Was told that Volvo uses specific connectors so I can change add any DVD changer

Hope that someone else as hit this problem and found a solution. Please help

How married to an actuated screen are you? A fixed possition screen in that particular spot is easy to do. A first-timer could do it themselves in about a day. You can even retain use of the speaker with a fixed screen. I can post up some easy instructions if you want to give it a shot.

As far as a DVD changer, most of them require control from a seperate headunit or at least it's own headunit. The only one that doesn't that I can think of, off the top of my head, is the Panasonic 8 disc. It's controlled by an RF remote so you can retain your stock HU. I only mention this because you did not specify if you were going to keep your stock HU or not. With the stock HU, you may have some trouble getting audio input from the DVD player. I'm not sure if the stock piece has an aux-in, but I doubt it. There are other options, such as splicing into the antena cable, FM transmitter, etc. None of these being as good as upgrading from the stock HU, IMO.

Was quite interested in the actuated screen cause it is protected from the sun and I wont have some idiot breaking the windows to try to steal it. Plus, it will be a cool chick magnet.

The 2 reasons I want to keep the stock HU is

a) it integrates with the volvo car phone. Its just cool then it auto mutes when there is an incomming call

B) I am not sure the standard 10 Disk volvo changer at the back would work with any other player and that would be a waste.

In terms of quality, how good/bad is HU-601 ? Is it something worth keeping or does any USD500 player works better then it ?

Would you know if the speaker only work with HUs or they are standard.....

Its frustrating with Volvo because they have so many custom stuff that you can simply plug and play a after market product

Auto-mute is something that many aftermarket HUs can do. Nothing special in terms of Volvo's HU being able to do this. Also, there's nothing "custom" about the speakers in terms of what input they'll take. Electricity is electricity.

If you don't mind using something like an FM transmitter for your DVD audio, then there's no reason to change to an aftermarket. Most people arn't happy with the quality of this type of setup, though. The only other issue is the lack of DVD units that you have to choose from (due to control issues). Only one that doesn't use a faceplate comes to mind, as I said.

For an motorized screen, things get a little more complicated. You'll also have to lose the speaker under the grill.

Theoretically you could buy an in dash flipout monitor like lilliput or xenarc, something along thos elines, and just mount is vertically in the spot where the volvo nav unit goes (center speaker like u were saying) but just eliminate the gear that will normally flip the monitor "up" and just put a brace or stop of some sort in to keep it in the "down" position, but in this case it would be vertical.
