Low Oil?

Hey guys i have been checking my Oil DipStick for like the past 2 -3 days and there no oil hitting it. Now FYI..... I bought a new Dipstick from the Volvo Dealer for my car a like a month ago because my old one handle broke off. Only difference is that the handle is a little brighter Organge. As for the lenth i dont remeber if i measured against my old one to see if it was the same (i think it was...). I did however check my oil level with the new Dipstick when i got it but not sure what the reading was.( my memory is worse then a 80 year old man <_< )

Fo Saftey purposes are there any other ways of checking to see if my oil level is low?? Exhuast Smell, smoke etc. Performance decrease?? Idle reactions. Anything at all??? I will be changing my oil soon since 3k miles is almost here (like 400 miles or so left). But im considering in doing it early just to be safe. Then i can tell exactly how much oil i have when i drain to see what i really have. Then fill up 6 qts and see what the mark says on my Dipstick.

What do you guys think???

Ty for taking the time to read this.

Thanks again,

Orlando

Like you said, this would definitely work.

I would just change the oil right now, including the filter, and then you know for sure if the dipstick is correct or not.

I'd say change it now, or at least add some just to be sure. It'll increase the oil pressure if you have to much but for a short time it won't do any damage I don't think? Gotta be better than your engine seizing.

NO!

Don't just add oil at random. Much damage CAN occur, i.e. blown seals!

Do the oil change, NOW! Add the proper amount, and go from there...isn't there are post about dipsticks floating around here? I seem to remember that the dipstick TUBE needed to be replaced along with the new dipstick? Seems like a good time to use the search feature.

Similar thing happened to me. I went to pull the dipstick and the handle broke off. So I went to Volvo and they gave me a new dipstick. I came home and it was not the right size (to long or short can not remember). So I did not want to use it and instead just superglued the old one back together. Yes I superglued it but it seems to hold good and I have pulled on it pretty hard and it did not break.

I wouldn't just "add" some oil......too much ( extreme ) can cause hydro lock. The dealership did one here

cuz JIFFY LUBE actually filled the motor and didn't realize it. Alot of the dipsticks are replaced with a stick

and tube setup......I would verify w/ your dealer that you got the correct set up...doesn't sound like it!

I would not be concerned with measuring how much is in there right now. I would be more concerned with changing it ASAP and knowing exactly how much was put in and were it measures on the current dipstick.

I would not take a "wait and see" attitude with this. Change the oil now so you can be sure your motor is safe.

wow just finshed changing my oil (right before the Rain hit!!) . Wow...... my Poor car was running on barley 4 quarts of oil.. :( I cant believe i let that happen.) As far as my dipstick i believe its accuarte as my old one. I drained all the oil and put a fresh 5.6 qts in of Castrol 10w-40 Sysnteic.(dipstick read full) Then i Started the car let it idle for 2 mins then i checked dip stick again and filled accordingly. ( Added the rest of that 1 bottlle. So total i believe was around 6 qts.) I Check for leaks and it looks good so far. I will have to do more testing throughout this week and next. Just to make sure i dont have any serious leaks. And check my dipstick to make sure its at the right level.

Thanks for all the help guys and im glad i changed my Oil today

Thanks again,

Orlando

4 quarts is not that bad of a deal.. no starving around corners (i am guessing..i have not run this car a couple quarts low). many millions of miles have been put on these 5 bangers with 4 quarts of oil in them (and 20 lbs of air in the tires).

Yes,the "bright" orange dipstick is for 6 qts. "neon like"

Some came from factory w/extra capacity & that dipstick-usually had big orange circle label on stick.
