How To Clean O2 Sensor

USMC850T

Recommended Posts

ok so about 2 weeks ago i went into limp mode. No CEL or anything until 2 days ago or so. I went to great lengths to figger out what whas wrong to the extent of replacing my BCS and ripping the CBV off the turbo (fucking impossibly difficult).

This morning I went and had my codes cleared. There was one about bad cat or o2 sensor low, something like that I did not get a good look at it before it was cleared. It worked, I was back in boostland and couldn't have been happier. Go home and turn the car off. 5 hours later I go to work and low and behold I'm back in limp mode again!! FUCK!

I'm guessing my o2 sensor must be a lil carbon covered or something. What is the procedure for cleaning it off? Do i just unbolt it and dip it in gasoline or something? Maybe swab it down?

Any help is appreciated

Thanks in advance,

Jeff

PS I'm on the ST chip, which is most likely the culprit for the rich and carbony conditions.

If you dont want to splice it they sell them for $95 at autohausAz.com for a Bosch 15097

Unfortunately, not anymore. The price is now $135. Emailed them today and they said Bosch "increased their prices". The $25 universal from eBay is a very tempting deal.

I thought that was going to happen because it was so cheap compared to other places.

Will race gas screw it up?

And lets say i want to try cleaning it so im not stuck in limp mode for the next week, torch it?

Cleaning is a waste of time and effort...and if they ARE original, the effort will be great! There is a good chance you'll damage them. You will also need an O2 sensor socket...I prefer the type IPD sell as opposed to the "deep socket with a slot" style

When mine was bad I had no limp mode. I would check for more codes also. Maybe someone can add to this about your car being in limp mode. Your problem might be more than just the O2 sensor.

Anyway you are definitley due for a new O2 sensor.

By the way how many miles are on your car?

Also I have read they can get contaminated and ruined.

Another way to get it off is using a large 12" crescent wrench if you already have one. Works on the front one.

If they're stuck, the adjusable wrench will mearly round-off the threads...then you're REALLY screwed! Been there, done that.

Here's what I use, along with a torch to loosen up the sensors. It's a 7/8 Flare crowfoot socket, and a 10" 3'8" drive breaker bar. Apply mucho heat first!

Here's a close-up of the sensor tips. The one on the right is the rear sensor, original to the car with a 140k. Left (front) unit has been there for 5 years/70k
