dirty socks
Hello. this is my first posting on this site. I have a 2000 S70. I tried to change the tranny fluid, but I was only able to drain three quarts. I drained those three quarts, and filled with 3 fresh quarts. I believe I may have used the wrong type of fluid, because the tranny began to slip after doing this. I have since gone to the dealership and purchased the correct fluid. Now I would prefer to just drain all the old fluid out at once and replace with fresh. My question now is what exactly is the correct method for draining and replacing all the transmission fluid in this particular model car? This car has an AW51 transmission. Thank you for your time. Any and all replies are greatly appreciated.

MoM
I have a 2000 S70 GLT and I changed oil recently. First, you should use ATF-3309 made by Mobil. It is synthetic oil and it has proprietary chemicals in it. Volvo sells it 18$/qrts, but you should find it for 2-3$ elsewhere. You should start the car every time you put new fluid in your tranny, shift on all gears, wait 5 seconds between each shift and you'll flush 2-3 qrts. Repeat this until you get clear red fluid(about 12 qrts).Good luck.
BillAileo
Mobil/Volvo JWS 3309 is the correct fluid for the AW55-50/51SN transmission and you definitely do not want to use anything else in it. Mobil/Volvo JWS 3309, however, is not a synthetic.Bill
MoM
You're right Bill, it's not synthetic. Thought it was.
ms007
You're right Bill, it's not synthetic. Thought it was.If its not synthetic its not the right fluid.Mobil makes the AW spec fluid for volvo, toyota but it doesn't mean there fluid is the same.I spoke with the field rep for volvo and he recommended buying the toyota fluid one because its a full qt and two its less money.I have the BG synthetic in mine and works fine so far........... Time will tell.

MadeInJapan
My take on this is that Mobile won't consider it a "synthetic" because of hot water they and others got into a while back for claiming synthetic when their oil was actually a "blend." Volvo on the other hand will call their exact same stuff synthetic because it's a blend and has synthetic in it. Standards within the oil industry are more stringent than non-oil folks. It's the same stuff, so why sweat it. MoM did the right thing....saved some bucks over the Volvo "synthetic" stuff because he put the exact same ATF in his vehicle by using Mobil. Guest Guest
Actually Mobil is the one that brought the lawsuit because they believe that a synthetic is a PAO or other non-crude based product. So, if it was a synthetic Mobil would say so, if it isn't they won't. They don't ergo it isn't.
