Volvo C70 Convertible Roll Bars Deployed

Recommended Posts

Hmmm, I don't think we have ever had that problem before. Hopefully one of the Volvo techs here has a solution. If I were to guess though, they probably aren't designed to retract.

My bars deployed taking a turn to fast, and forgot there was a 45lb dumbbell in the trunk. The dumbbell slammed into the side of the trunk causing the bars to release.

Lower the top, each bar has a reset clip, push the clip and the bar down, disconnect the bat. to reset any codes.

I have heard but never seen that the roll bars are supposed to break the rear window if the system deploys. True?

No, if you look at my signature photo, they wouldn't even line up with the rear glass. The ROPS pieces aer just behind the rear headrests.

Apparently not in our cars, but I just saw a BMW 325 Convertible on the way home today (late-90's model, with the clear plastic rear "window")... Its anti-roll bars had deployed and punched two holes right through the window.

He had taped over the damage with clear packing tape, but the bars were still sticking up like two sore thumbs.

Anyway, it made me think of this thread from a few months back. Now I wish I'd gotten a picture of it.

Don't you have to replace the gas cartidge in order for the ROPS to work again? I thnk on the newer style C70's they have to be replaced, so I would assume you would on the pre-'06 C70? On a side note the 2006 C70 ROPS bars are designed to shatter the rear window.

Old style are spring loaded, I can't remember how the new ones work. And the new ones are what I was thinking about when it comes to breaking glass. Anyone drive a new one yet? Seen one? Take a ride in one?

Cool, that's kinds nice if they deploy, you can just reset them. I have driven the new C70 a few times and what I remember most about it was the DynoAudio stereo haha. Its nice, but it could stand to have a more: A. responsive steering, B. More pickup. The chasis is very stiff, it doesn't feel like a wet noodle convertable. Its a huge difference over the last C70 which has quite a bit more chasis flex. Its a nice car, but I think fewer auto enthusiasts will buy this one over the last C70 coupe.

There is a catch lever on the inside of the outer leg on each bar, it looks kind of like a door latch mechanism. Pull this with your finger or screwdriver and simply push the bar back down till it locks. No codes to reset…nothing! After this you just snap the “ROPS” covers back on. The covers should have been flung off, but if they haven’t because of the roof, remove them by pulling strait up before you start.

So... after you do this, they're back down where they belong... but are they definitely good to deploy again if they're actually needed?

I don't suppose there's some sort of "test" button to do a practice deployment.

For no good or healthy reason, I'm thinking of ways to have fun with this. Just imagine, a button you could push on your dashboard that would instantly make the ROPS units pop up. You put little messages on each -- like two-word epithets ending in "YOU" -- and deploy at suitable moments. Or "BACK" and "OFF."

Reckless and stupid, I know. Forget I mentioned it.

The new one blows the old one out of the water, I love them. The stereo kicks ass too. I have been driving my GF's dads SC430 and the new C70 is a much nicer car than that too IMO. Gotta love a convertable with a stiff chassis.
