RussB
I've tried three...I also know a bunch of people who have tried multiple setups on their cars...mind giving any feedback on the suspensions you've tried?Only one, that's why I offered no advice or opinion. burchs1
Stock=comfortable, but not very responsiveBilsteins with stock springs=Firm, as other have said, large bumps are bone jarring..handling is much improved over stock. As others have said suspension opinions are subjective..depends what your goals are. So many other suspension components effect the overall feel..sway bars, engine/tranmission mounts, bushings, endlinks, springs, etc, etc. With cars this old you should consider replacing all your bushings, mounts, endlinks, etc.I'm not kidding when I mentioned the qbricks perforformance adjustable endlinks..they make a huge improvement in the front suspension..HUUUUGGGE! Qbricks is also a good source for Delrin bushings to replace control arm bushings and engine/transmission mounts. (I don't have these yet, but many people here do.) Other alternatives are poly bushings and mounts. The stock front struts and mounts are easily shot before 100K miles. If you have the stock endlinks you need to replace them frequently they don't last long at all. My suggestion to anyone replacing their supspension parts is to go with something other than stock when it comes to mounts and bushings..there are better alternatives (some mentioned above) which will greatly improve the overall feel/responsiveness of your car..plus you won't need to replace these upgraded components frequently if at all while you own your car. echristodo
I'll give my $0.02 here as I usually do in these threads. This HAS been beaten to death about 1000x already. HDs are stiff as heck. If you don't mind a really stiff, feel every bump ride and/or live where the streets are perfect then you will be ok. On the autox track I liked the HDs very well. On the drive to work they sucked a$$. Not to mention they raise your car about an inch. So in effect you are puting on a 1" lift kit. With HDs and stock springs you will have significant fender gap.I went with Koni adjustables and SAM springs. This is a much more compliant setup than HDs. It isn't perfect, but it is a much more tolerable ride. I'd consider the Weitech as well because that is a good buy and seems to have good reviews. What is everyone else's opinion on this? Am I really going to be turning my car into an xc minus the awd? Excluding the additional drop the TME springs will give me....
burchs1
TME springs probably will bring the lift back to normal, thus it won't really lower your car like you think with the HDs..what has been stated is correct. Here is the monster truck effect, this is my car. I've had HDs on it for the past 5 years. Look at the second picture, LOL. I need to do something (yeah tires and suspension). The tires have probably the best dry traction I have ever seen however..at least in the 3 brands of summer tires I have used..the tires came with the rims when I bought them last year.):What is everyone else's opinion on this? SkyWriter
Look at the second pictureit looks like it's the 205/45-17's that's giving you the fender gap... maybe not.
burchs1
Well it may be not much worse than stock..but I haven't been around too many other 850s or Rs to compare. This is the stock tire size, anything else will rub without some modification. When I bought the car in 1999 it had 205/55 16s on Columbas..a common size people think is OK, but that destroys the fender wells..the correct size is 205/50 16s.it looks like it's the 205/45-17's that's giving you the fender gap... maybe not. I dont like trucks, hence the swedish purchase! Maybe I acted to soon getting the HD's? I only have one pair though, so I guess if I change my mind in the next few days I could always go with the Koni's... Crap, I feel like a girl shopping for shoes!
