Solution For Bass Problems In 850's

As I was contemplating where to put my sub and then realizing the lack of Midbass from 5.25's I came up with a great location to add a sub that will impede upon some useful space, but will also create some.

Put a 8" sub right behind the center console and infront of the back seat. There is enough room to put in a 10x10 box with a height I have not yet determined. This will make it hard to carry 3 adults in the back, but not impossible. I also though that you could make the box in such a way to add cupholders in the top of the box.

This way you do not lose any trunk space, you will not have to lose your spare tire and it will work in a Wagon. I put an 8" box that I had from my porsche back there and the bass was more than adequate.

However the 8" inside the cab and the 10" in the trunk sounds even better.

Thoughts? Bing??

well, I did a similar, albeit simpler than what you stated, set up in a tacoma double cab:

personally, i would say its not a bad solution but i think you wil loose a bit of seat travel, and of course the usefulness of the center rear seat. and i dont think its a good solution for hte lack of midbass issue at all. if a system lacks midbas, you get bigger midbasses, a sub producing midbass frequency almost never sounds good.

persoanlly, my volte still goes with a trunk mounted enclosure of some kind, of course for me, i never worry about spares, havent had one for 8 years now, and never had an issue. for the wagon, one idea you may think about, though its more custom, is putting two small side enclosures that takes up the space aroundt ehw ehel well to the left and right of the trunk area...wont take up much useful space but will sound great...two 8s will do well with minimizing space suage :)

I am having a Box made for my JL 10" on thursday to fit in on the drivers side fender well in the trunk.

I am going to listen to the 8" and 10" together this week and decide if I still need the 8". I know that I need the 10" because I listened to the 8" for abot 6 months and while it sounds good, it does not reach the low frequency's that the 10" does.

I have also contemplated putting two Focal 5" subs someplace in the car. Either in the rear doors or maybe in the center Idea instead of the 8" sub.

The guy building my box had a competition car with two 5" Focal subs for midbass in the car and sounded awesome.

So far, with two 5.25's and one 10" sub, the car sounds good, but I am not yet happy. I just switched out the aluminum dome tweeters for my Focal soft dome's and I am much happier with their sound.

I may be able to come up with a pair of Focal 5.25" to replace the DB's for cheap.

BTW, Bing, where are you located? I wish this board showed your location if you entered it.

i am in pittsburgh, PA.

well, the focals are nice, but they quired a ported box of some type to sound the best, and i think if you want more midbass, thats not hte solution? why not get a set of kicks built with some 6.5" midbass drivers? that will be by far the best sounding, chepast solution to your issues...

Yes, I know Gary Biggs. He is certainly good and not cheap. I have my own opinions about that store (Car Toys) and some of their installs.

I have been debating Kicks and know that is the only way to achieve the best sound (in the Volvo) and I may end up doing that in a few months. If I do then I will re-use my Focal 6.5's. Thus far those are the best sounding speakers I have hear (At least in their price range.)

I prefer dealing with Mike Hudson. He has worked in car audio in Tulsa for at least 15 Years and was at Car Toys for a while. Now has his own shop, Boomers. Not fond of the name but he is by far the best friend anybody could ever have in car audio. He certainly tries to treat every customer like they are the only one. Something the other shops cannot do.
